    Only one egg hatched

    Good morning everyone.

Lani and Stewie layed 5 eggs about a month ago. One they pushed aside one from the beginning, but took turns sitting on the other 4.

    On Tuesday, one egg hatched

The chick is doing well, mom and dad take turns feeding it.

They're also very comfortable letting me handle the baby and the eggs.

The other eggs have not hatched, and it's been about 4 days. They are all fertile, and mom and dad still sit on them determined something will come of them.

I've heard that eggs hatch about 2 - 3 days in between. Can it be longer?

In the meantime, the baby is doing very well, mom and dad take turns feeding it, and he's starting to stand up a tiny bit. He can also hold his head up properly now.

    Re: Only one egg hatched

Was the egg they abandoned egg #2? If so, then that would explain why it is taking longer for the next egg to hatch.
If it wasn't egg #2 then I wouldn't ne too worried quite yet. Do you hear peeping? If you do, then that could mean the egg is struggling and you may need to help the chick out. This must be done quite carefully though. If you don't hear peeping then I wouldn't be worried. Birds are like people, they don't al develop at the same rate. It may just be a slow developer. Don't give up quite yet on the eggs. I don't know how many times I have almost thrown away an egg just to find out the day I was going to throw it out, the egg hatched. So, I would give it a couple more days.
GOOD LUCK and let us know what happens!

    Re: Only one egg hatched

Thanks. Yeah, now that I think of it, I think it was egg #2 that was pushed aside.

I haven't heard any peeping yet, but each egg looks nicely developed, a good size air sack etc.

I placed a dish of water in the cage so Lani can take a bath and sit back on the eggs. I haven't seen her take a bath yet, so every once in a while I'll dip my finger in the water and rub the eggs a bit to give them some moisture

    Here's some pics!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...4/DSCF1959.jpg (mom and dad are fine with me handling eggs and baby)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...4/DSCF1962.jpg (mom feeding baby while dad smiles on proudly).
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...4/DSCF1967.jpg (after bedding change - mom is very camera shy).

Ooh ohh! I see a tiny crack in one of the eggs (raised UPwards). I dabbed the crack with some clean water to hopefully soften the crack. I don't have a stethoscope, so I can't hear the chirping... Should I still be able to hear the chirping if I hold it up to my ear?

Sorry for double post Just curious

For you advanced breeders out there - What kind of babies can you get from a Grey dad and Yellow mother?

I don't know if I would moisten the eggs in that way. It might actually drown them. The eggs have little pores throughout them that allows them to breathe; that is why you must thoroughly wash your hands so the greese from your hands don't clog the pores. I would be careful on that concern.
    Nice pics.

Aww waht a cute baby! The chick looks like it has red eyes, so it will be lutino like mom. That means that the dad must be split to lutino, so the baby can be either male or female. That means you will have lutinos and greys, unless dad is split to cinnamon, then you could have female cinnamon babies.

    Re: Only one egg hatched

The photo of the egg with the little pip marks is a sign of hatching.

you should be able to hear the chick peeping through the egg, very faintly as he is working to break the shell.

You have a Lutino hen, and a normal male who is split to lutino.

The first chick is lutino, and could be male or female since both parents have the gene.

you have an equal chance to get babies that look like mom, and babies that look like dad.

    Re: Only one egg hatched

Ooh. Ooooh. The pipped egg is deffinately peeping!!! Will post pics. Mom accidentally scratched the chick. It bled a little. I cleaned it up and placed him and eggs on clean paper towell over the bedding. Should I use something on the scratch like polysporin??

Also clipped mom and dads nails

Baby also appears to have dry skin nerw it's eyes ann beak area. Is this normal? Is it dehydrated?? Anything I can do?

    Re: Only one egg hatched

The chicks skin is probably dry due to low humidty in your room. Try misting the front of the nest box (not the chick or eggs) to help increase the humidity

    Re: Only one egg hatched

thanks. How about the scratch on the chick? It's on it's hind-quarters.

Here's a youtube video of Christmas being fed.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjaJQUuUAds

2nd egg is pipping... when I held it while changing the bedding, I felt it move around... kind of like a heart beat... when I held it up to my ear, I couldn't hear peeping yet, but could hear "tap...tap....tap"

    Re: Only one egg hatched

it can take up to 48 hours for the egg to hatch. if you can hear frantic peeping then the chick might need help. and you should have a nest box for them.
