Do birds know when to wake up?

That sounds like a really stupid question.. and it probably is.

I cover elmo when hes sleeping and make sure there is no light shinning through in his cage because he wakes up at 6am in the morning otherwise.

Last night elmo put himself to bed at about 9pm (he normally doesn't show signs of tiredness until 10pm) I account this for, because yesterday morning I didn't cover elmos cage as I was going to work quite early. but he still woke up an hour before I was meant to wake up. So he didn't get his hours of asleep. He sleeps from 10 - 9am.

Fast forward to now. he;s been asleep for 12 and a half hours at the moment. 9pm - 9 :30am (at the moment...) Do I wake up him? Is it ok for him to sleep this long. I know he must be tired from not getting enough sleep the night before.. Do fids know when they have had enough sleep or do they wait for the sun to come out?

My philosophy is that they can be tired, have bad nights like we do if there are no other sick bird symptoms. Mine is uncovered, with a night light and is silent till he hears morning movement, then all hell breaks loose with frantic flock calls till we check in with him.

Elmo is awake now.. literally after I hit the post button! lol..

normally if I roll over in the morning, I will hear a groan from elmo.. basically telling me to shhh.. I think.
I am assuming maybe he was just really tired and in a deep sleep.

Just keep an eye out for poops, eating, drinking, all the stuff you already know but you may just be right.

Depends on the bird, I think. Tyrael used to be way too excitable to sleep when he heard people about. Now I think he is just used to his regular bed times and morning times. All of mine are like this, come to think of it. Birds have a MUCH better sense of time than we do.

both mine wake up at the crack of dawn so i dont cover them anymore and it reduces the noise levels too!!! they go to sleep when dark falls so right now that would be about 7:30pm and wake up around 5am and snooze in between all day

Loki is like clockwork with her sleep. She will go into her sleeping box at around 10pm then wakes up at 10am. She is completely uncovered, there is light shining in and people busting around the kitchen but she doesn't make a peep until at the very earliest, 9:30am. I am blessed.

I figure it's like jet lag; our bodies will sleep what we are used to. I think most animals have a circadian rhythm that designates how long they sleep and when to wake up. I'd account the extra sleep to being just a bit tired from the day before. Loki often sleeps in after a night at the parrot club.

Chiquita goes to bed at 7pm when I go to bed and watch movies. She usually just play’s with her toys a bit and at 9pm we go to sleep. Sometimes she wakes me up because she talks in her sleep really loud. Her head will be tucked and she will be chattering away in her sleep. Then at 4am she is up. Im a really early bird and get up early but sometimes she will wake me up so she can come out of her cage.

I have morning insomnia. It’s totally nuts and Im not taking a sleeping pill at 4am, haha I wish I could sleep in but I never do. It sucks! You poor thing, still awake at 4am. I went on Zyprexa because I was the same way so you should try it. It’s AMAZING how much it helps insomnia.

waking up at 4am.. that is.. illegal!.. I feel sort of bad in the sense, I have changed elmos sleeping pattern from when he first came home. Initially he would wake up at 8am.. but now he sleeps in to about 9am.. and 10 if he sleeps in his happy hut. he really has become my bird, the only real human food he is eats is rice.. and well.. my background is chinese.. go figure

Mine all go to bed at 730ishpm and they get woken up for breakfast at 6am. They get to go back to bed at 645am and I think they are ups offically at around 8 ( I am at work, but that is the time they wake up on the weekend).

They go back to sleep? wow!! I find that once elmo is awake she's awake until her midday nap.

My birds usually sleep until they hear people up in the morning, and generally go to bed once it gets dark. Milo sometimes will go up to his sleep perch around 8 or 9, it just sort of depends how loud it is.

I only cover 5 cages of all my birds (the others are just too complicated to cover plus they are in a room just for the birds where the others are either in the living room or my bedroom )

Even being completely covered they wake up at the same time every day, Sometimes you hear them entertaining their self or eating and they won't chirp (at least not loudly) until i uncover them even know they can hear the birds in the bird room chirping up a storm (those birds start at about 6:30 to 7 am

my 4 birds in the living room know when it is 7 am and if they are not uncovered exactly at 7 am they get very loud and scream until they are uncovered all 4 are Quakers!

The 4 in my room are lovebirds and they won't get bent out of shape until about 8 am if i haven't got to them yet

I don't think it is so much they "know what time to get up" I think its more of the repetition if they go to bed and wake up/get uncovered at the same time all the time they learn when it is past that time

like mine the birds in the bird room and the love birds in my room get put to bed at 9 p.m , the Quakers get put to bed at 10:30, When 10:31 rolls around and their cages aren't closed and they aren't covered they start their screaming UNTIL they get "tucked" in for the night and as soon as you tell them "good night" and go through the routine of shutting the cages, and grabbing the sheet to cover them they go silent before they're even covered. and then we have at the most about 10 mins of chattering either to their self or amongst each other - Their cages are side by side and one big sheet covers them all so they can see each other Then its silent til 7:01 A.m if they're not uncovered lol

So around here weekends suck they don't know how to sleep in, Days the kids have a 2 hr delay or the off chance school was closed for the day (like today) suck because they do not allow us to sleep in - even if its just 30 mins lol

My bf and I are now both working the same schedule (3pm-11pm) so, I put their spectrum light on a timer, and leave another soft light on until I get home. When I do, I take each and put them in their own sleep cage in another room (since we stay up and watch tv). In the morning, when I hear Eddie chirp (Jimmy doesn't make any sound) I know that means he wants to get up. He can hear us walking around and chirps when he wants us to get him. Jimmy stays in his hut until I put my finger in to get him and he politley steps onto it. That is how I know. I think they are like humans, some days they sleep late, and others they get up early.
