Growing millet?
I want to try and grow my own millet spray. Can i just take a clump of the millet and put it in some soil and water it or does it have to be specal? When is the best time to start and end the millet season? How do i know when to pick it? I need to know everything! How much sunlight, water, etc etc.

Re: Growing millet?
I have no idea. Why do you want to grow it yourself? It is not expensive, at least here. I can buy a big bundle cheaply at my bird store, and if it is cheap there, then why go through the hassle of doing it?

Found this in like 5 seconds searching on google, there are probably better instructions even if you have the time to look.
If you do it, keep track of where you got the seed and how it worked out, im sure there are alot of people here who would like to know (i would)!

Re: Growing millet?
I didnt mean to grow it but last year we had two nice millet plants in our yard in my flower bed and they got to be about 1/2 the size of the ones you can buy but it still was neat because it was a tall plant with this big millet spray growing from the end of it. We had to support it to keep it from breaking the plant off. I didnt do anything special and it grew like a weed out there so its a easy plant to grow and so cool to see it get the spray and watch it grow to a longer and longer.

Re: Growing millet?
No, I didnt know what it was in the beginning and used fertilizer on the flowers growing next to it so didnt want to give it to boomer because of chemicles. I am going to try to grow it again this year but in a place whereI know it is growing so it wont get fertilized.

I thought that millet that we feed out of the bag is dried? Will it still grow?

Re: Growing millet?
I feed the wild birds outside and there seed grows lots of wild millet in the flowers below the feeder. It isnt like the spray millet we buy in the stores because it is just the seeds on the plant in tiny clusters and not a long spray full of millet... if you know what I mean. I am going to use some of boomers spray millet and spread in on the ground and just barely cover it with some potting soil and see if comes up.
I hope you dont mind me showing you a picture of the spray millet that grew wild in my yard last year. We loved watching this grow out there last year, it started as a tiny millet and just kept growing and growing. It was just starting to turn brown when I took this picture.

Please find out anything you can. I think you have to dry it either in the oven or in the sun. thats what most of the directions said

Re: Growing millet?
I throw boomers old seeds and millet out to the wild birds so my plants out there just came up from what I threw out there. I dont think it was baked or anything else, it was just one I bought at the bird store from the big box of it. I wondered when you know it is done or not if you grow it though. The one I had kept turning browner and browner so I think it dried itself on the plant because it sure looked just like the kind of buy at the store for him and broke off just like it too.

Re: Growing millet?
haha, millets funny. it grows fast at firsts, but then you just get to the 'ima kill it' point of waiting. and at first it looks like those weeds that grow in feilds, kkinda bushy at the end. then they get better. i grew 3 sprays last year, but i got sick and couldnt water em.
but ima retry this year.
and the seeds are just sun baked. tehy grow outta the bag

Re: Growing millet?
Talk about growing fast... I threw some in a container on my patio & watered it... literally, that's all i did.... and its already started growing. Its about an inch tall and its only been a week. Looks like I've planted grass in a pot.
Too bad its winter & the next frost will probably kill it. Its been warm for a few days though.

Re: Growing millet?
Once it finally gets the spray of millet growing on it I think ours 2 months to finally get big enough to cut it off. I am going to try to grow it this year too, the one that grew last year was one that just grew and like Brice just said it looks just like a tall weed with a bushy part on the end for a long time.
