A lot depends on what kind of lovebird you're getting. A hand-raised & socialized baby for a pet, vs. a bird for showing or breeding stock. Add mutations, splits, etc., not to mention rarity (black-cheeked, Nyasa or Abyssinians being harder to come by in most countries than peachies, masked or Fischer's) and what's popular in your part of the world... yeah. It can get kind of crazy!

Quality hand-feds in my area go for $100-$125 for peachies/eye-rings. When Petsmart was selling parent-raised lovies, they sold them for $99 (or thereabouts). Pet stores offer hand-fed (peachies) for about $99, $50 for parent-raised (although few seem to offer either anymore). I've not ever seen lovies priced based on mutation like I've seen with cockatiels at pet stores.

The most I've seen when browsing has been a few hundred ($200-400) for eye-rings of more unusual mutations (read: not what you'll find a pet shop).

Rachel does have a point: when a new mutation comes about, EVERYONE wants it but NO ONE has it, so the few that do can charge more and likely get it. But if you can wait 5 years or so, you'll likely pay less.

Pickle, Golden-winged parakeet (brotogeris). DOH 3/22/08.
Beetle, Peach-faced lovebird (agapornis). 8/6/05 - 8/28/07. Always in my heart.

I got my Red faced lovebirds for just under 1000 for the pair about 10 years but I sold a lone female about 14 months ago for alot less as no one wanted it because there are only about 10 in the uk and no one wants to sell and it is impossible to get one into the country.

I could not imagine paying $9,000 dollars for a bird unless it pooped gold
I have no idea about pricing, Ulii was $53 with taxes

You could travel to Belgium/Germany/Holland to look for birds, then take them back to the UK on the boat. You can take upto 5 birds per person without any papers or anything. I often take birds to and from the UK. Not all boats allow pets though, although norfolkline will.

Btw, feel sorry for who ever paid 9000$ for a hybrid and what appears to be a pastel fischeri.

Out of the common species, most expensive I have seen is around 700 euro for a pure white peachfaced. Other species can often be more expensive. Black-cheeked are not really rare here, lots for sale including mutations. A fair few Taranta around aswell, and you do see the odd Pullarius too.

There's numerous pure white peachfaces been bred across the world. Not trying to say Albino, as we all know albino don't exist in PF. Selectively bred mutations. Some of the birds have a faint blue or yellow tinge, some are snow white, and it's the snow white ones that bring the high price tag.

This is a photo of young birds (hence beak colour) I stole from someone else. I do believe it's from a breeder in the Philippines. I'll find out the mutation combination.
