Re: What kind of lovebird is the most expensive? just a survey...

Well, I would assume the six rare species of lovebird would be the most expensive. As to which of those six species is the most expensive, I wouldn't know since I don't think anyone here in Hawaii has any of them...

As for the most expensive between PF, Masked, and Fischer's... in Hawaii, PF is the least expensive because they're readily available. This is excluding Opaline, though, as those are running $150+ in pet shops (I saw $300 on the Oahu Craigslist) because they're still a "new" mutation. I don't really see many Masked or Fischer's in pet stores, but when I do they're usually around 11/2 to double how much a PF costs.

Thank goodness I love PF's the most!! Hehehe.

Sorry I can't really answer your question...

    Wow.

I think the most expensive I have heard of was what I guess you would call dilute violet maked it looked more like bright purple what you could see small fleck of white through and that was $300.

But see there is a guy who lives about 2 or 3 kms from me and he just had birds for the joy of it and breed on occasion (more for himself) he has violet masked and a one I really really want (is was a masked with black wings) and everything and has a good price (for me anyway)

Actually I got Yuki from him (slate PF)

Price for lovebirds depends on your location. New mutations in Peachfaced, Fischer's and Masked will command higher prices. The very first Violet Masked Lovebird that arrived in the United States came here at the cost of $2,600.00 about 12 yrs ago.

However, the rare species, Abyssinian, Black Cheeked, Madagascar and RedFaced remain expensive all the time.

If you lost them it would serve you right for spending that much on it.

Dont get me wrong but when I see things like that I always think that people buy those birds just to say "i have a $9000 bird".

Makes me feel sorry for the bird

red faced lovies are without doubt the most expensive here. specifically the blue mutation as it is the recessive genes. i know a breeder here who spent a YEAR trying to find a way past the import bird flu laws to get a boy here... for more money than my CAR. they are excessively difficult to breed, and the same guy told me you could count the pairs successfully bred in this country on one hand. and they were the standard lovies.

that and the swinderns black collared lovie which is technically agapornis, although not looking like it! and i've heard they dont like being kept as pet

Thanks Lee for the adorable sig!

There's a lady in Ohio who sells show line quality opalines for $250-$300 depending on color and sex.

Swinderns Lovebirds cannot be kept in captivity because of dietary requirements. Very little is known about them except that the main staple of their diet is figs.

ohhh right... i knew it was something that stood them apart... just couldnt remember what.

i know red faces are rare in capativity because of breeding preferences... they dont do tree holes or boxes... just abadoned ant nests. and only special nests at that. so you have to build an ant nest for them lol

man, the most expensive i've seen lovies around here in MN are 300 for a pair of mask and 20 at the cheapest for a standard parent raised PF. lucky for me, i got mine for 45-50 kinda hard to justify spending a ton of $$$$ in this economy on a bird. Especially on a $9,000 lovie. Um, my tuition costs that much for a semester. And you know what? My lovies may not be the latest mutations, the coolest mix of colors, heck, they aren't even well mannered, don't eat their veggies, test me all the time, refuse to step up and go back to their cages, but my 45-50 dollar lovies are priceless. I'd rathe save the money for more bird supplies and another bird
