Re: I'm going to start breeding!

Good for you Jake, you made an excellent decision! I wish everyone was as thoughtful and insightful as you are. Many, many people would breed the bird anyway, because they LIKE their bird. The same is true for dogs. Many people breed without pedigrees or health testing because they feel like their dog is nice, and pretty, and should make puppies. It never ends up well.

I bred birds when I was in highschool, and it was a lot of fun. And to be honest, I never would have brought my breeding stock to a vet, because there wasn't an avian vet anywhere when I was breeding. And I probably wouldn't have been able to afford it. The idea scares me now, but I never thought of it then!

If you are really interested in breeding, you should look into getting a nice pair of something from a reputable breeder that you really want. English budgies are a good place to start, because they are uncommon and typically aren't available in petstores, so you won't run into the issue you ran into with Nikko.

I don't think there is anything wrong with breeding in a careful and thought out way. The idea that everyone is going to rescue a bird isn't very realistic, people always want babies and certain colors, and breeders are the people who do it best and most carefully.

good job jake!!! there should be more people like you in the world!! you looked into it first and didnt dig in your heals at what we said.

goodness, it seems that it is the younger people these days who have greater maturity when it comes to something like this! i am very impressed!!!

i agree rachel. and i dont mind breeders who breed to better a species, its just backyard breeders with no clue bungging any 2 birds together and hoping for the best that gets me.
if people feel the need to get into breeding, they should atleast do it properly.

Re: I'm going to start breeding!

Thank you all for the kind words. I might get into breeding later after I research a lot and find a good breeder. I might actually breed the english budgies instead. I have never seen them in a petstore except for one HORIBBLE petstore in zansville ohio. All the birds were sitting in the very bottom of the cage. They had toys and stuff but they all looked sick and there feet were nasty. So I may breed english budgies instead. I know now that I need to do LOTS of research and that I know I can ask for help here. Thank you all for your help and honesty.

Re: I'm going to start breeding!

I did some breeding with tiels and I will say this. Do you plan to hand raise and feed or not. If you are planning this step do you have a 24 hour vet to get to in case something happens and do you have 4 months to do nothing but hand feed?

You have to be home and you cant really go out anywhere once it starts. I had to give up job searching for my four. She laid six and I lost two. Are you prepared for dead eggs and the latest born to die due to being over run and starved out by the parents BEFORE you can handle and feed them?

My female tried to kill her young cause I was hand feeding them, it also smells quite bad as well. Is the house hold ready for that and the constant noise?

Kerry makes a good point though, most of these people here do. You cant go anywhere cause you feed them (if hand raised) every 2-3 hours and for 3-4 months thats pretty long to do .... nothing.

Oh don't breed English budgies They are soooo genetically messed up from inbreeding (since they are bred only for appearance without regard to health), they have half the lifespan of normal bugs because of this! I personally think they are basically a human experiment gone wrong Don't support that, you are better than that

Nothing wrong with breeding for color, if you get good healthy birds and know a bit of their history. If you're gonna do it, do it right.

Hillari - I breed English Budgies, and, you are very missinformed. You might want to do some research of your own before you toss out a blanket statement like that.

most pet store birds dont have records because they almost alwas com from a mill and are not seen as a bird but as a profit
