    Budgie help-swollen belly

My budgie over the past few weeks has developed a round abdomen. At first we thought maybe she was going to finally lay eggs (we've had her 7 years and she's never laid a single one-she's in with a male but regardless). She doesn't seem bothered by it in the least. She's never been the most active, or best flier, but they do come out almost every day to exercise but she will often stay in the cage. Still eating, still looking good except her tummy below her breastbone is big and round. I held her today to touch it and it's not hard, it feels almost like fluid in there but it was not painful for her when I touched it. Any ideas? I volunteer at a vet's and I can ask them but in the meantime...any suggestions are welcome.

Best to take your budgie to the vet to be examined. At the minimum, your budgie could be overweight and have an accumulation of fat under her skin, which if left untreated can lead to more serious problems such as liver disease. If she is overweight, the vet can advise you about her diet so your budgie loses weight.

The vet should be an avian specialist. If you volunteer at a vet that is not an avian specialist, take your budgie elsewhere. Cat and dog vets do not know much about treating birds.

Could be a fatty tumor or something. She needs a vet.

Thanks. I have also figured by now it is probably a fatty tumor. Is there anything a vet would do for this, besides a diet change? If that's all she needs then I think we could manage without the vet. I'm not saying we won't take her, but we already had to take her last year for a cold and it ended up costing quite a bit.

The thing is, it could be a fatty tumor, or a malignant tumor. Both have different treatments. She needs a vet to know for certain.

Another thing it could be fluid of some type that the vet could drain.

Anything new on this little one?
