Arrow Will Cockatiels bond with other types of birds?

I was wondering if it was possible for a Cockatiel to bond to a different type of bird ... for example a Parakeet. If the two cages are far apart (like opposite ends of the same room) will that prevent any bonding between the two?

I kept a cockatiel with a parakeet for quite some time. They would groom each other and seemed to enjoy each other's company.

Each bird is an individual and so it may not work out between the two you have - be sure to closely supervise any playtime they have together, and provide plenty of playtimes BEFORE you cage them together.

Caging far apart might prevent any bonding, but they will still flock call to each other.

I had a male peach-faced lovebird named Kiwi that was best pals with my male cockatiel, Frostbite. Frostbite was so depressed after Kiwi died.

Today, I have an 11 year old male cockatiel named Macho that is a big baby to a 10 year old male parakeet I have named Lucky. Lucky feeds and preens Macho and looks out for him. Unfortunately, as much as I would love to keep Lucky with my regular flock of budgies, Macho calls for him and gets really upset if he can't find his parakeet dad. LOL

All of my keets scare the crap out of my cockatiel. They chase after him and he's soooo afraid of them! I'm trying to get them to get along a little better (so I can have them out together), but my cockatiel is very spooked by the little aggressors.

Each situation is different. Some people even house the two together. I wouldn't recommend that, but cages next to each other and supervised play time is a good idea. Good luck!

I have a very large cage with 6 budgies and 2 cockatiels . They seem to get on fine. I think the budgies tend to be more subdued with their big cousins in there. When I take them for 'free time' the little rockers just start up royally.

Last night Babylon stayed up with them on their perch rather than sit with Samara.

Won't the cockatiels bond with and prefer the budgies over you? That's the problem I seem to be having.
