Exclamation I need help! The feather around my lovebird's eyes are loss

    Hi Everyone,

I am so gald I found this forum, knowing that there are so many lovebird owners out there! I am in love with my lovebirds they are very adorable.
My 6 mo lovebird has feather loss around the eyes, it is been going on for 3 weeks. The skin appears red and itchy. My lovebird is still active, playful, and normal. I also found out the feather around the beak area are loss too. NO other feather loss around the body. She started this when she had a cold due to the freezing weather. I am not sure if this feather loss was caused by the cold or she has some kind of viral disease. I took her to the vet and I have her test for fecal and parasites. I am very worry about my bird and want to know if anyone of your birds have this kind of problem. (p.s. my vet said she doesn't think it was french molt or PBFD) But I still need your opinion!!! thanks !!!!!

updates--Results were all negative. No parasites, fecal analysis is good. No mites. Now what is her problem? Could it be that notorious disease? I wish this is not pbfd !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i dont think you get red itchy skin with PBFD or frnch moult. it's a feather condition... not skin.
i'm expecting it to be some sort of mites. the vets was the best move... when do you get the results? if it mites it can sometimes be as easy to treat as a drop of liquid on the back of the neck.

she is a single bird isnt she? no chance she is being picked on by another?

Could be worth calling the vet to find out if there is any creams you can put on her to ease the itching... i wouldnt know what to recommend around the eyes tho. maybe vaseline?

Thanks Lee for the adorable sig!

Mites was my 1st thought as well.

Did you take her to an Avian vet, or a Normal Cat/Dog Vet?

Red face Re: I need help! The feather around my lovebird's eyes are loss

I want to thank everyone for his/her immediate response!
Faithy (my lovebird), is living alone in her cage, and I have this 8 yr old lovebird live next to her cage, and one of faithy's siblings living upstairs and a baby green cheek conure. They don't really interact, but since I hold Faithy a lot, I was wondering that how come the other birds doesn't get the mites? My house is very clean, and my birds never have mites before. It is pretty strange if that is the case. I am still waiting for the result from the avian vet. She gave me this " chloramphenicol ointment" to instill into each of her eye.

After reading your responses, I FEEL SO MUCH BETTER. I can't go through it, if Faithy had viral disease. Last year, I loss my beloved white face violet lovebird, she has cancer, and her tumor grew to the size about half of her body. I thank God because she was so blessed, she ate and played well, it was the anemia that killed her. She died in my hand and I still miss her very much.

oooh that's really sad about your white face.
but i'm really pleased we relieved your concerns about faithy a little!

If it is mites your other birds may catch them, but as i said earlier it is an easy thing to treat x

Thanks Lee for the adorable sig!

    Hey guys,

I just got a call from the vet. The results were all good news. She has no mites, no parasites and fecal analysis are good. Now, I am starting to worry again, if she has no improvement on the antibiotics, and the ointment after a week. What is her problem? I really hope this is not a viral disease because I don't want Faithy to suffer!
