    Hummingbird help

    Hi guys,

I have a hummingbird nest in my backyard. I've been watching the mom from a distance lay on her eggs. Just recently, the eggs hatch and there are two little chicks. However, I haven't seen the mother in over a day. What should I do? In the event the mother doesn't return, should I try to handfeed them nectar?

    Thanks,
    Kristina

    Re: Hummingbird help

Hi guys, just an update. I went to my bird store today and asked what to do. Apparently it's illegal to take care of them, so they referred me to a woman who knows all about hummingbirds. She told me to make sure the next is abandoned, I should sit for an hour and never take my eyes off the nest. I did and what to you know, momma bird did come by! Apparently, when hummingbird chicks are feathered, the mom no longer nests with them. She usually perches in a tree or bush nearby. Just thought I'd give an update just in case this happens to anyone. Crisis averted! All is well.

    Re: Hummingbird help

Yeah, we had a hummer nest in our front yard of my parents house every year. The chicks grow so fast and get so much larger than the nest, mom can't roost with them.

My mom saved a baby hummer last year that fell from it's nest. She thought it was a worm on the ground, and looked down and it was a newly hatched baby. Apparently the mom had built on a really flimsy branch and the nest had capsized one the babies started wriggling. My mom tied the branch up and both babies fledged!

Wait until the babies start flying, it is so cute, and often, you can sit outside with them and they will land on or very near you, because they can't fly far and aren't afraid of humans.

I am alway's amazed on how tiny the nests are. I love hummingbirds, I put out several feeders every year and love to watch them.

I haven't gotten a chance to snap some pictures of the babies, yet, but here are a few of the momma when she was nesting:
