    Lightbulb Just a Theory...

Well, like the title said just a theory..

Someone told me birds toe bite to assert dominance and figure out the "pecking order". Well, I noticed that my birds also tend to go after my dog's paws and nails as well. And my nails and fingers. Are they trying to assert themselves over me?

Any other inputs or additions are appreciated !

Sure. Rosco used to attack my dogs all the time. They knew she was in charge and respected her for it.

My theory is that they go for toes etc as they happen to be there at the time and they seem attractive to attack.

    Re: Just a Theory...

Ok, so if that's the case, how do I stop her from doing it? I've tried ignoreing it, cuping her in my hand on her back, putting her on the floor, time outs in the cage...nada. It doesn't hurt but she pretty much does it constantly when she's playing on me and it's driving me insane. Imagine someone just nipping, and nipping, and nipping....well, you get the point!

Sorry if this sounds flippant, not meant to be...have a bird safe pair of slippers/shoes so she can't get to your toes and have the dog away from the bird in out of cage time as it will only take one snap from an angry dog if she bites once too often?

    Re: Just a Theory...

Oh, she doesn't get my toes...it's the fingers. And her & the dogs don't interact really. Shell hop down to the floor when they're sleeping and make a run for the paws. But momma's too quick, hehe! Buy yes, I keep an eagle eye on her & the dogs when she's out. So, gloves is all I can try..! I thought I tried it all, but I didn't relize I was out of all other options. Like I said, it doesn't hurt..just annoying. So, I guess I'll just deal with it. Thanks for your help

My lovies are big on fingers. It can hurt, and its is annoying lol. The worst is when they start picking at scabs, moles and such. OW. And they know where they ALL are on my hands and arms. Determined little things >.<

Ive tried ignoring, ive tried a mild earthquake method, putting them back to their cage, nothing really works lol. The only thing i can do is distract them with a toy or something else that catches their attention. Being that theyre so ADD, its the only thing that seems to work lol

That's what I was afraid of...I tried it all, LOL! I'll try the distraction method, but when they have their mind on something it's hard to persuade them otherwise..!

    Re: Just a Theory...

Really try to keep your dog away from her. It takes a one second snap. If Chiquita is out the dogs are out of the room. Chiquita tries to sit on Rocky's head but I don't trust it.

Chiquita bites my hands, sometimes I don't think birds know their own strength of their beak. Some bite to hurt and claim dominance. Do not allow them on your shoulder if this happens. Just on your arm. They may try to sit on your head to claim dominance. I allow Chiquita on my head and shoulder because I know she is not trying to claim dominance. She does not bite hard and never leaves a mark. Chiquita does not know her own strength. So what you have to figure out is if she is just playing or trying to claim dominance. It just sounds like she does not know the strength of her beak and not to hurt you.

The only thing you can really do is try to ignore it. She may just stop. Maybe someone else can think of a better suggestion.

How old is she, she may be going threw a bluffing stage.

There's a VERY simple answer why they go after feet....
it's one of the most basic of battle strategies.
Break your opponent's foundation and they cannot stand against you.

    Re: Just a Theory...

She's 6 months & one week. She just started molting a week or two ago if that matters. But when she wants scritches she either makes these cute peeping noise &/or put her head down, fluffs it up as to say "right here mom!" I don't let her on my head at all, I had curly hair & she gets caught in it. She is allowed on my shoulders & is such the sweetheart while up there too. She cuddles up on my collor bone & ticks herself under my chin and beak grinds. Such a mommys girl. I'm starting to think it's just b/c she gets bored or something...she is VERY high energy!
