Talking My daughter got her first pet a Turtle

well my 5 year old daughter has been doing great in school and I thought it was time I got her her own pet. we got a turtle and named him
spotty. I will be taking care of Spotty all she does is feed it once and a while. Spotty is a 4 week old red eared slider. I never owned a reptile before but my husband has. I got a good book on Turtles and read it front to back. did you know turtles where alive around the time of the dinosaurs. they also eat plants and meat witch I thought they only ate fish. and they like a peace of cuddle bone too for calcium. We have him in a 10 gallon now but will move him up to a 30 gallon soon. I only got one good picture of him but I will be adding more to his home soon.

oh and we always wash our hands after touching the turtle or the tank.

    that is cool

I haven't had turtles since i was about 5 - i can't even remember what in the world they were but one was huge and one was tiny about the size of a Quarter if that

But I did know the eat meat, my b/f's sister in law had one for many years and he loved hamburger BUT she said when he ate meat she had to clean the cage more often because the meat made his poop stink really badly.

hers also loved Fruits, and dehydrated papaya (we gave her some we had for the birds)

Congratulations. I hope you will have your red ear for a long time.
This is a good link for information:

It is very important to have a way for the little guy to get to his landing easily, that the water is clean, that there is a dry land with a full spectrum light and heat and a good diet.

I need to get some plants for the little turtle and I have a uv light above the basking area. but the turtle dose not use it I think the little dome I got it is to steep for it to get on. so I am just going to wash a flat rock and use that as a basking area for spotty.

You'll be better off to move it to at least a 50 gallon soon rather than a 30 - they will outgrow a 30, and it saves money just to get it a large tank to begin with. Turtles are very messy, and need quite a bit of space with a huge filter to handle it.

How did you go about getting one so young? In the US they are illegal to sell under 4 inches - maybe the law is different up there?

thats a good idea I will buy a 50 gallon then on the 30th. the ten gallon will do for now its just for a week or so. and I am also going to get a filter and a heater to. right now I just have two 50 watt reptile lights above it to keep it warm.

yes its illigal here to sell them over 4 inches. this one is about a inch long.

I have a Painted Turtle and although it's nice to have a uv light, because they are a northern species of turtle, a uv light is not needed. Nor is a heater (remember they go through the winter and fall outdoors). It's a nice bonus though.

Be careful with large rocks in the bottom of the tank - if they are too close to the side, the turtle can get stuck and drown.

Re: My daughter got her first pet a Turtle

One thing that I was always told with turtles is that these enclosures are much healthier for them. I actually learned that from a reptile enthusiast I knew as a kid (who oddly, ended up murdering someone, that was scary to think I was friends with him for years and years... whole other story). Anyway, I just read an article about them, too.
