    Same sex mating

I recently purchased three girl and two boy budgies and for the last day or two the weirdest thing has being happening, two of the girls are mating. I am possitively sure they are both females because they both have the brown ceres. I have being doing a lot of research on budgie breeding but have never heard of this. Is this normal behaviour?

It happens...if the ceres are super crusty looking and brown that just means they are both in prime breeding condition, and probably hormonal enough to take out their "urges" on each other...

Color sexing is not 100%. You may have another boy there. I would go to the vet and get DNA testing just to be sure. . . Same sex mating is not normal (at least in my experience).

I had a budgie in the past that he EXPERTS said was a boy, and "he" ended up laying eggs!! So unless you get DNA test, you will never know with a 100% guarantee.

It's actually quite common... if you're wondering, then get her DNA sexed. But same-sex mating between birds is not unnatural or unheard of.

    Re: Same sex mating

It happened once when I didn't have enough balance in my aviary...I had about 6 boys and two non breeding girls, and I saw two males going at it like crazy. I was extremely bewildered until I found out later that it happened occasionally...

    Re: Same sex mating

it is very normal and not just in budgies,

with my budgies I had them all separate girls in one cage, boys in another, Boys mated boys, girls mated girls, when they were all out together and even before i separated them it happened even have girls mating boys

I even have 2 male love birds that mate (or at least i'm leaning towards they're both males, Gave them a nest box 2 different times for well over 3 months and all the mating going on and never no eggs LOL

I'd be more worried about the uneven number. it can lead to fighting and having one bird left out all the time with no "partner" (no matter what the gender they do partner up and have their favorite "friend"

    Re: Same sex mating

I have this go on from time-to-time with my flock of 26. I have 6 females and the rest are males in this one particular cage. Every 3 to 4 months, two of my males have their ceres turn brown after some of the more dominant males mate with them when they start seeing that two of the females want to breed. Once the whole uproar of breeding is over, those two particular males' ceres turn back to the blue-purple. They are the two smallest males in the group and try to avoid as much trouble as possible.

I do have "Brokeback Budgie" go on in my cage with a couple of my males that are best pals with each other.

    Re: Same sex mating

It might be aggression, if you say they are both females. We had two male ones and they were doing the same thing. Had to seperate those two. According to my Avian vet this isn't uncommon amongst same gender birds. Our male and female finches did the same thing.
