Things I've always wanted to ask bird owners...Bird MYTHBUSTERS!

I've been a pet bird owner for, oh, 20 years or so. In all that time, I've done a ton of reading, joined many forums and posted a lot of my experiences. Often what I've found is that certain things are said on bird forums/bird books that don't necessarily check out in real-life - kind of a myth vs. reality thing.

So, I wanted to ask some general questions and get your answers...just to see what real-world experience has been. I am not looking to start a debate by any means, just looking for answers, short or long, doesn't matter.

I'd really appreciate if you answer ONLY for your self, meaning have YOU experienced this. I don't want to hear "yeah, that happened to my friend's neighbor's bird", etc.

Granted, some of my questions are going to be centered around the kinds of birds I have (parakeets and cockatiels), but feel free to add your own questions.

    Here are my questions.

    1. Has anyone ever had a female parakeet that talked/mimicked?
    2. Have you ever had a bird die from lack of quarantine?
    3. Have you ever had a parakeet that's plucked itself?
    4. Have you ever had a bird die from a night-fright-induced injury?
    5. Have you ever had a pet bird die from ingesting a plant in your home (bird safe plant or non-bird safe plant)?

I'm sure I'll think of more later...
Mateo (cockatiel), Chirpa (parakeet), Nigel/la (parakeet), Nico (parakeet), WeeWoo (parakeet) and Peri (parakeet).

Re: Things I've always wanted to ask bird owners...Bird MYTHBUSTERS!

    1. Has anyone ever had a female parakeet that talked/mimicked? nope, but they became lesbians - does that count for anything (i guess it could be mimicking if "the L word" was on tv in the background).
    2. Have you ever had a bird die from lack of quarantine? nope. and i am guilty of that.
    3. Have you ever had a parakeet that's plucked itself? nope.
    4. Have you ever had a bird die from a night-fright-induced injury? nope
    5. Have you ever had a pet bird die from ingesting a plant in your home (bird safe plant or non-bird safe plant)? nope

what about: have you ever had a bird die from eating the occasional froot loop?

have you ever had a bird die from not steralizing their toys/dishes/feathers on a daily basis?

have you ever had a bird die from not providing 12 hours of pure dark and silence for them daily?

( i am interpreting this thread to be a dig against the extreme advice out there - something i rebel against, anyway. i read it (actually, i know of a few forums that are paranoid beyond belief - TF is not as bad), digest it, then usually ignore it.)

    I have a "yes" to #1...

Dazey has mimicked a canary distress noise, as well as a few of Rocky's unique sounds, though she definitely doesn't talk.

And "no" to the rest of the questions.

If Lovies can be in this then I had a yes on #3. Have you ever had a parakeet that's plucked itself? Boomer plucked his chest bare because of a reaction to some medicine he was on, we stopped the meds and the all the feathers grew back within 2 weeks.
Fly Free Boomer, we will forever love you.

Re: Things I've always wanted to ask bird owners...Bird MYTHBUSTERS!

    1. Has anyone ever had a female parakeet that talked/mimicked? No.Had a female lovie that did.
    2. Have you ever had a bird die from lack of quarantine? No, but I had a client whose bird got PBHD from a new bird she bought at the pet store.
    3. Have you ever had a parakeet that's plucked itself? No, and I've never seen/heard of one that did.
    4. Have you ever had a bird die from a night-fright-induced injury? No, but a friends cockatiel had a night fright and broke 3 bloodfeathers and had to go to the hospital because she was weak from blood loss by the time she uncovered her in the AM
    5. Have you ever had a pet bird die from ingesting a plant in your home (bird safe plant or non-bird safe plant)? No, I've never had plants in the house until now and they are all bird safe.

A lot of these things are not likely (eg dying from not quarrantining, not serilizing, etc.). But why risk it? I value my birds life enough to inconvience myself to quarantine them and NOT feed them junk food, etc.

have you ever had a bird die from not steralizing their toys/dishes/feathers on a daily basis?

Roxy died from septic infection. She was young, so her immune system was not as strong. But there is a fair chance she got it from something that was unclean in her cage. There was no way to tell and I hated myself for so long (still do a little) to think that there is a chance it was my fault she died.

(sorry for hijacking the thread - my point in my post is that so many views expressed are beyond extreme, and ASSUME that people are idiots, and assume people won't be responsible. i, personally, don't usually ask for online advice for that reason).

Re: Things I've always wanted to ask bird owners...Bird MYTHBUSTERS!

i had a bird years ago that died from a night fright. she was a sun and i woke to this terrible noise. i ran to the cage and she was on the bottom of the cage. i grabbed and ran to my parents room crying telling them to hold her. she was awake but not able to move much. i called the only vet office that has an avian vet and she was not on call. so before i could get her to the vet she died. broke my heart and i cried for a very long time. she is buried outside my window near where i sleep. that was the only bird to ever die on me. now my birds are kept in cages near where i sleep. that way if anything happens i am right there
Life without birds, is not a life I could live

I have never QT any of my birds. IMO, the only way to do it properly is to QT the bird at a completely separate location. In a standard home, there is usually central heating/air. Anything you are worried about preventing, can travel through the air, on your clothes/skin, etc. So keeping the new bird in another part of the house really isn't doing any good.
