    Basics to prevent babies

Yes, I know about the birds and bees, but if my 2nd budgie turns out to be a girl, can I have the 2 together and prevent babies by taking the eggs out of the cage? or will they even lay eggs if there is no nest? I heard someone say they put in fake eggs. Where do you get them?

    Anything else I should know?

Just want to avoid issues later before I embark on letting them bond. thanks

If you put the two together, and they are a male and female, and they do lay eggs..do not take the eggs. You can boil the eggs and then give them back, if you don't want them hatching, and let the birds sit until they get bored. But if you take away any eggs, they will continue laying..which severly depletes the female's calcium supplies and if she starts continually laying eggs it can kill her.
So addle any eggs (if they do lay) and let the birds sit until they get bored.
They don't necessarily lay eggs just because there is a male and a female. If you don't give them a nestbox or anything resembling that..make sure their food/water dishes aren't too big so they can't lay in there, put a grate on the bottom of the cage so they cannot reach the newspaper (if that is what you use) and make a nest..Make sure they get more hours of sleep than awake, don't mist them too much (as showers can put them in the mood to breed)...and it is very unlikely you'll get eggs. You don't have to do all that, but if they do end up laying then those are all things which can discourage them from laying. Also changing the cage around should make so they feel less comfortable and wanting to make a nest.
You can buy fake eggs from a petstore or just use marbles if you want to.

There are no guarantees, but most budgies won't mate and lay eggs if you avoid giving them somewhere to nest. There are ways of dealing with laying, like limiting their light and food, etc. that you can do should that start happening.

also, open food pots are just asking to be laid in - 'Specially the ones on the floor of the cage.
