    Hair Loss Around Sherberts Eyes

    Hey Everyone,

I have a "Vet" appointment scheduled for tomorrow yet my bird has hair loss around both of his eyes..I thought it was from molting (his first molt) he just turned around one. I noticed a lot of dandruff and he is itching so I am going to check for mites. He looks normal and then when you give him a bath he has patches of hair loss like around his hind legs and the middle of his back. He does not feather pluck and the hair loss around his eyes is slowly growing back..

Has anyone else experienced this with there Peachface Lovebird..or Lovebird. This is my first bird and I would love some help.

Also when he is wet his neck has two large indents with very thin skin...kinda like a chickens neck is this normal. I will ask the Vet there is so much to learn about your new pet I am so in love with my bird...what a great pet

Thanks everyone for being here and for your HELP

    welcome to the boards!

Sometimes the first moult can be harder for birds and some go a bit patchy. My Sammy is just in the middle of his first moult and looking decidedly scratchy and scruffy.

The 'dandruff' you described is normal and healthy. when birds get feathers through they grow in as spikes... the feather is contained within a protective sheath and has a blood supply. When the feather is grown and the blood supply gone the sheath dries out and flakes off leaving the new soft feather beneath. If your bird is really tame they will often let you rub the sheaths off. Just be careful... if they are dark they usually arent ready and still have a blood supply. If he yelps it's still growing and sore. Most birds can sort most of their feather themselves but struggle to reach the ones one their heads and faces and appreciate sritches from their humans.

i agree balding around the eyes and really heavy patches is unusual so i'm really glad you have the vet visit booked.

What is your baby's diet like? moulting can be very stressful on their bodies and you can improve their diets by adding things like protein (cooked eggs) and red palm oil. Talk to your vet about it. I'm glad you are bathing him... it helps the feather sheaths come off and relieves the itching.

birds do have very thin skin, but without pictures its hard to know exactly what you mean. Any concerns you have should always go to your vet. I'd hate to be wrong!

Plus... even if he is totally healthy the vet will reassure you, and get to know your bird when he is fit and well. this means if ever he is ill it's a lot less stressful for him and you

As you're new to birds can i ask if your vet is an avian specialist? a lot of normal vets will see birds, but birds are VERY specialist. You're always best with an avian certified vet where possible. If not possible try and find one who keeps birds himself. My favourite vet in the UK isnt actually certified with birds. He just has a lot of experience of being owned by birds

Let us know how it goes x

PS... post pictures. We LOOOOOOOOOOOVE pictures!

Thanks Lee for the adorable sig!

Thanks for all your help..yes I used this boards help and went to the avian vet link they suggested and there happen to be one avian vet down the street from me.

I am looking at different bird diseases..I hope my bird just has a bad case of molting I looked at other pictures and it kinda looks like he might have Psittacosis yet he has no other signs just the balding...his poop is fine, no sneezing...ummm (patches of balding) ;( I sure hope not.

I wish I knew more of where he came from...I bought him at a pet store so chances of diseases increases. I will let you know more after our 4pm vet appointment.

As far as Lovebirds necks I would love to get a picture of a healthy bird (wet bird) so you can see how a healthy bird should look...I never even noticed Sherberts weird neck/balding until I gave him a bath. He isn't into baths so I am gentle and give him one he loves the after effect but not during

He is a very happy bird..I work from home and so he is with me 80% of the time and just adores me and is so happy. I sure hope its mites I did notice little light brown dots a lot in his bed..

Do mites cause hair loss? I did take him to the pet store I bought him they think its just molting because there are no brown mites (the kind there used to seeing) yet after reading mites are hard to see and there are different types..who knows its just scary not knowing what is causing his patches of hair loss...its not severe just a few areas like above his feet behind his legs...under his beak and just abnormal balding in tiny areas..I wonder if other have experienced this with there first molt? Do you have pictures of your bird close up...of his molting process?

I know I sound like a worried mother I just want the best for my new baby xoxo

Thanks for reading/listening Dana and Sherbert

Hi Dana, welcome to the site, I would add in things for you but Helen gave you some perfect help and left nothing for me to add. She is right, we here just LOVE pictures and you wouldnt fit in at all here if you didnt love and worry about your bird.

Hopefully Sherbert is just having a hard molt and is fine, let us know what the vet has to say about Sherbert when you have a chance.
Fly Free Boomer, we will forever love you.

Re: Hair Loss Around Sherberts Eyes

    Hi,

I have a lovie too that is going through a pretty bad molt right now. He had a thin spot on his chest and I took him in because I was worried. All his tests came back ok and we just are dealing with a bad molt. He is cranky and itchy, so daily baths are important. My guy had the dandruffy stuff which is the disintegrating feather sheaths. I have been giving mine a product that is called Avix Booster. I got it from my vet but found it online. It is made with red palm oil which is really good for the skin and feathers. I have noticed a dramatic improvement in the new feathers quality and color, plus he is a ton less itchy. I have increased protain and give lots of scritches when wanted. Also extra sleep helps too. good luck with your baby. Oh I just realized that one of the threads that pixibubbles pointed to was my thread on Petrie he he.

    lol
    hope you dont mind Becky.

To add to what Becky said make sure Sherbert is getting a good 12 hours of uninterrupted sleep a day

IF you've had him for the full year then chances are it isnt something from the pet store.

About the baths... have you tried spritzing him or taking him in the shower? you could just put the shower on full blast and steam the room up then let him sit in there for a while.

Thanks Lee for the adorable sig!

aw its great that you care enough to take him to the vet, well done!

im sure it all sounds normal! birds necks are VERY thin, we just dont notice coz of all the feathers!, ive seen eva's wee neck a few times, will try find pics of a wet lorri to see if they are anything like you mean.

good luck and welcome to the boards!

oh and also, my dorks are moulting a bit at the mo, they always look scruffy when moulting! XD i try to give them more baths, more night time and extra veggies

Before you ask, yes I am a b!tch...
But I am an honest b!tch.
