    My house was on fire

Sunday night my water heater and underbelly of the trailer caught on fire. I smelled plastic burning and called 911. It took them about 5 minutes to get there and by that time the smoke was rolling out the front door in thick clouds that clung to the walls.

Fortunately, the fire was mainly contained to the underbelly of the trailer and the walls in the bathroom and bedroom. My boyfriend and I along with the dogs got out right away and made it safe. I was in too much shock, and since everything happened so fast, I was unable to grab any birds. Of course, as soon as the firefighters got there, I told them I had a bunch of birds in the house and they needed to be brought out. I thought for sure they were all going to die.

One team of workers immediately went to work on the fire, while another team of workers started bringing cages outside. Thankfully the weather was fair, only a mild wind. They brought out Mango, then Sydney, then the Red Bellieds, then Dweezel and Zorro, and then went to work on the bird room, which was in itself a huge task. They allowed me to stay by the back door, grabbing cages, loose birds, and nest boxes while they brought them out.

The first cage from the bird room that came out was horrifying. It was Adonis and Athena, my young pair. They were dead at the bottom, but I tried CPR. It didn't work as they must have died as soon as the smoke got into the room (though there was a towel under the door that prevented a lot of smoke from entering it). The rest of the cages were brought out but by the time they got to the wooden aviary that houses 3 pairs of birds, I had to inform them that it could not be brought out (it was built in the room). They grabbed nest boxes from the aviary and handed them to me while I put them in another aviary they had brought out earlier.

Ernie (my rescued Black Masked Lovebird) was either not noticed, or was already dead by the time they got to his cage, because they never even brought it out.

One baby still in the nest box died as well, as a result of Rowan and Fletcher abandoning the box while they were outside after the fire.

Everyone else is alright. Sydney is still a little soot covered, even though I have cleaned him, along with a Creamino Budgie baby. Out of 40 birds (including babies still in the nest box), 36 birds made it.

I took some pictures when they started to bring the cages outside, and then after all the birds were out and I was able to gather my thoughts.

We are staying at my boyfriend's mom's house for now, though Mango and the Red Bellieds are at my ex's aunt's house still (until later today). This is what the temporary bird room looks like now:

Re: My house was on fire

I'm glad ya'll made it out safe & that the fire fighters responded so quickly.
I'm sorry about the 4 babys that didn't make it -it could have been so much worse. My heart goes out to you.

The house looks okay, it came out of the fire extremely well. Best of luck with fixing or finding a new home-whatever the case may be.

My fathers home had a fire last year. He left the stove on w/ a skillet of crisco-- overheated-- when he came home the house was still standing, but when he opened the door Everything was black. It was like walking into night. It was fixable though, so I hope you guys can salvage the home and that most of your things came out okay too.

Wow, I'm so sorry this happened to you. It's sad that you lost some of the birds but at least most of them are okay. I hope you're able to get things fixed and get back to normal as soon as possible.

Wow, Briana. I'm glad you and most of the birds made it out ok, but I know it has to be tough losing the few that you did.

I hope you have good insurance and they will pay to fix your home promptly. Please keep us updated with this, and give all of the fids lots of treats and scritches.

Thank goodness that your bf and you are ok, as well as the dogs and MOST of the fids. Sorry about the 4 that didn't make it, but like others have said, it really could have been so much worst! I hope life gets back to normal as quickly as possible for you. Positive vibes coming your way!

Re: My house was on fire

    Thanks everyone.

I do not have insurance, so the place is how it is. The structure is pretty much shot, so it will be junked. The fire never spread into any of the rooms, so there is only visual soot damage and the burning plastic smell everywhere. The appliances will be salvaged along with some of the pieces of the place, but I cannot no longer live there. The floor under the whole bathroom is gone, and the water heater is no longer working. I can't afford to do the fixes it needs at this point. We will be living here at his mom's house until we find a better, more private place.
