Hi there!!
I'm excited because I just got 6 new additions to my family of Birds - 6 Australia Budgies. I went all the way out to west Chermside ( a long way from Kenmore, qld ) to buy them. I got 2 proven pairs, and 2 hens. And most of em are Recessives, one's Australian Pied, one is Dominant pied,and one Albino. Hopefully by Spring they will be settled enough to raise some chicks. They were actually sitting on eggs, but the guy I bought them from said they would probably just chuck the eggs out anyway if I kept them and the boxes. I saw a record of the birds' breeding, i.e. their parents, and grandparents. So you can't get into me about not knowing the parents' lineage.Nah I'm just kidding, they have a good line, and they're Australian, so I can't lose! As soon as thy went into the aviary, one pair immediately started looking at the nest boxes!!! I hope they breed soon!!! They are all really cute, and look like babies cos of their huge eyes.
Immediately the male of one pair started hitting it off with the hen, and had been doing so in the box all the way from the breeders
. I will send in pics as soon as I can use my mum's computer for downloading.

Congratulations!
Hehe, you can't go wrong with little Aussie budgies :-) We saw some wild ones outback in February this year when we went on a road trip... they were sooo pretty. There was like 50 of them, lol... wish I took pictures.
Anyways, I can't wait to see them!

Did you take a copy of the breeding records? 'Cause it's not a lot of help if a pedigree exists but you don't have it :P

I am taking the breeding thing seriously, I just don't understand why Bengalese finches cannot be bred with Java munias. Bengalese finches originated from java munias and striated munias, so I don't understand why the can't be bred with a 3/4 Bengalese/1/4 Java munia cross. The chicks would only have the tiniest bit of Java in them, so how come that would mess up the gene pool...?

Just because something is possible does not mean it is a good idea. If you are taking the breeding thing seriously, you need to do a lot more research on each species you are breeding (which it sounds like you are trying to breed everything with a pulse in your aviary) so that you DO understand these things.

i realise they are crosses, but i dont see how breeding 'mutts' is any good.
i mean, accidents happen, but actively trying to breed them? you might as well get some more bengalese and stay with bengalese...?

I decided in the "OTHER BIRDS" thread that I won't actively try and breed them, but I don't want to kill any possible chicks, so I won't provide nests and I will keep the sexes apart. Bengalese are just so hard to come by these days...
