    Re: Is this mold?

    I don't know...

    It could be a marking...

    O.O

You should learn to love your lentils, even with birthmarks.

It's not for me, it part of the sprouting mix I compiled. I've never eaten lentils.

LOL - in any case - It looks to me like a normal marking, those crop up every once in a while... LOL -but when in doubt, it's only one little lentil! :P

    Re: Is this mold?

Yea, it was trashed hours ago. I was concerned others in the jar might be molded too, but they are fine. I was worried I was doing something wrong.

How long do you wait for them to sprout? How long is too long? It will be 48 hours at 10pm.

    Re: Is this mold?

My lentils took overnight soak + 2 days.

Once they sprouted they grew QUICK, I barely got em' in the fridge before they grew too big.

    Re: Is this mold?

Mold on sprouts is really easy to detect. If it had been mold you wouldn't have to ask, you would recognize it, plus it would be on more than one bean. You did the right thing though, when in doubt throw it out.

    Re: Is this mold?

Thank you Javi, Holly, and Marilyn!

I feel a bit dumb now. I thought you threw them in jar for a few days, rinsed them twice a day and they were done.

What do I actually do with them?
    Germinate for 12-16 hours
drain, let sit, and rinse twice a day for 2-3days?

    Re: Is this mold?

Yes. I just use a small wire strainer and sit in a bowl of water, plastic around it for humidity, overnight. I serve as germinating seed but yes rinse a couple of times a day for longer. Some even wash in ac vinegar if they are worried about bacteria.

    Re: Is this mold?

    Step 1: Rinse, drain
Step 2: Fresh water soak overnight
Step 3. Rinse & Drain in morning. (feed as "soaked/germinated seed" now if you wish, some say this is when they are at their PEAK nutrition... or continue sprouting)
Step 4. Rinse around lunch, drain
Step 5. Rinse before bed, drain.
(times are flexible... just rinse a few x a day.)

You can continue to rinse & drain 2-3x a day until the tails are 1/4in long or so. Usually takes a day or two.

Put in the fridge for up to a week.

Best to sprout in a dark, cool place. (like a pantry or a dark-ish corner on the counter)

Most people don't have problems w/ bacteria, but if you do you can rinse them w/ ac vinegar, just give an extra rinse.

Sprouts get bitter when they get too long, so don't forget about them for too long! (hehe, oops)

Some beans are dangerous if not thoroughly cooked, so check the safe food lists. Lentils are safe to sprout, as a mung & azuki.

I like the mixes, but I don't have any local & won't be ordering food online for a while... so I can't experiment right now. Never stopped in the natural food stores.... maybe I'll get brave & do that soon.

I copied another posters Sprouting Jar idea.... its just a regular glass Mason jar w/ the lid insert taken out of the lid & replaced w/ a section of the plastic mesh from the walmart craft section. Makes for very easy rinsing & draining.

    Re: Is this mold?

I bought a bag of seed/bean sprouting mix online. I am very happy with it.
