    Canary males in breeding condition

    Hi guys,

I have wondered about this for a long time. One time, I went to Omar's and I saw one of the canaries had a bulb about the size of a pea sticking out of its vent. It almost looked like a prolapse, it freaked me out! I brought it to the attention of the staff and told one of the workers it looked like a uterine prolapse.

She said it was a male and that it was just like that because he was in breeding mode. Ummm.....I have never heard of this in any birds - is it true?

Mom to Ducky! (female cinnamon GCC)...THANK YOU Keet for the gorgeous sig!!
Won't you come see me after 12am?

Never heard of that, it sounds like BS to me, but there are some canary breeders on here that should have a better answer for you.

No I would say Hillari about covered it very eloquently I must say. even in breeding condition a male is only about 10% more pronounced then normal. The female has the greater physical change, otherwise durring the rest of the year even skilled canary breeders make mistakes in visually sexing.

That's what I thought too, thank you. I just found it funny that I got BS'ed from a bird specialty store, of all places. LOL
