    My little 'baby bird' died

I can't even believe I am typing this. You guys have been with me from the beginning, since I firrst adopted Pedro on Petfinder 4 years ago. He was my baby bird (although this year he was approaching 16). I found him at the bottom of his cage this morning, and I knew something was really wrong, that he was going. I expected him to go in my hands on the way to the emergency vet, he couldn't even walk and he kept gurgling up bubbles out of his beak. We got to my amazing bird vet, Dr. Doolen in NJ, and he put him in the oxzygen tank and gave him a shot of antibiotics and a shot of Lasix, not know what was wrong with him. I couldn't even coo him and make our little shared sounds, because the vet said even 'good' stress might kill him, he was just so close to the edge between life and death. Then a bit later I went to see him again and the vet said I could talk to him, and I called him my "baby bird" and called "Pedro....I love you...pretty bird..."cuz thats what he always said when he talked..."Pedro...pretty bird"...

He died at 2 pm this afternoon. He couldn't breathe, even in an oxygen tank. He was hypoxic (sp?).

I was so afraid it was my fault. Yeah his cage papers were a little dirty. Also he had exposure to a new bird we found in the wild over the weekend. He also had gout and we left his medicine out on the counter once when it was supposed to be refridgerated.

But the vet said none of it was my fault. He had a pulminary embolism in his lung. He said it had nothing to do with gout or exposure or any possible virus or anything.

I just want to remind everybody, treat everyday with your bird as if they were gonna die tommorrow. I would have done things so much differently yesterday if I knew Pedro was going to die today. I wouldn't have been out with my friends as much, and I was even laying by him and he didn't seem interested in playing with me, so I gave up and went upstairs to play with my ferrets. If i had only known I had one day left, I would have showered him with so much love. I can't even describe how much attention I wish I had given him, if I had KNOWN. I hope if there is any lesson to be learned from this, it is give your bird a huge hug and love him like it is his last day, cuz they can be gone in an instant.

My baby bird, my Pedro, pretty bird......I love you soooooo much. My life will never be the same without you. I keep thinking I hear your nails clicking on the hard wood floor...I will never forget your warm dusty smell. MY BABY.

I am so sorry for your loss. We have a conure that is mostly blind so we don't know either when will be the last day. It does make you really appreciate them. You are very brave to share with us.

I'm so sorry there are no words that actually make it feel better... just reading your post brings back the flood I feel when a pet dies. You gave him a great 4 years.. don't take that lightly. Listen carefully and you'll hear his chirping in thanks to you..

Oh no, I'm sorry for your loss. I think many of us can relate to that feeling of "if only I had known...if only I had done more." It sounds like Pedro had a wonderful life with you, and I hope you'll always know that.

I am so sorry for your loss. The embolism had NOTHING to do with anything you wrote that you feel you did wrong. It sometimes can be very hard to get our hearts to know that even though our brain can. Hugs.
