    jaguar.

SO, I've been driving by this car for like 2 weeks now, I purposely take that way to look at it lol. I love it so much. Its a jaguar obviously. I'm trying to find it on the web but I'm not sure what year it is lol. Its grey with a tan interior and I love it so much. They are asking 1595 for the car. If I had to guess on the year I would say like 1980 or above. lol WIthout knowing the exact date does anyone know if this is an OK price for the car if there sn't much wrong with it? ahaha

Um, price depends on much, much more than how old the car is - I think you should do some more research.

    Agreed.

    Mileage of the car?
    Previous owners?
Up to date on its servicing?
How many accidents? Major or Minor.
Type of engine? I'm not too flash on cars, but I know that the old rotary engines, you struggle to find people who understand them properly.
How easy is it to find parts?
    Are those parts expensive?
How fuel efficient is it? Don't wanna buy a car to be done over on fuel.

This is just a small list of other considerations if you don't want to get ripped off.

I wouldn't get too side track on the fact it's a jaguar. Personally, I am someone that would save a bit more to buy a new/newer car knowing I am safe with most of the questions above.

Aw, and to think the Jaguar factory is just down the road from me!
I don't really think a jag is a great first car, to be honest. Here in the UK, at least, it would cost so much in insurance that the cost of the car wouldn't be worth it, regardless.

I didn't talk to the people today but mom did and she forgot to ask about mileage.
The car has only had one previous owner and its the people that are selling it.
They said that the engine was just completely rebuilt 5 years ago. It has two gas tanks but only one works. The security thing is screwed up to where the radio won't work. But those are the only problems.
The only major accident was the engine blew up but it has been completely rebuilt.
The parts have to be ordered from the Jag factory. The mechanic in town can work on it and hes cheap and reliable but he said the parts for a jag is like double the norm.
Not sure about fuel efficiency either.
    I figured out its a 1987 Jag.

    Re: jaguar.

You need to call your insurance company AND call and ask about prices for parts. I probably wouldn't be able to afford insurance and I'm older and have a decent driving record. Prices will probably be through the roof. My mom bought an old Porsche a few months ago and planned to refurbish it. She did so on a whim and when she called about prices for parts she learned that small, simple parts like weather stripping cost a few hundred dollars, and it went up from there.

I do love old cars though. My first car was a '68 Mustang. I had a lot of fun working on it with my dad. Prices for something like that are cheap, and insurance is dirt cheap as well.

Yea, I don't want an ordinary every day car. I want an older car. I love the car. I wish I had a pic to show you guys. It would be so cool to be able to tell my friends I drive a 1987 jaguar. lol.
It probably isn't very reasonable though.

    Re: jaguar.

Then you need to think about who rebuilt the engine.. how reliable is it the engine? Who rebuilt it? Any warranty on the engine?

I agree with Shannon, insurance is another big issue. Definitely get a quote. Being a young male. You are going to be slugged. Your excess will probably be huge.. and considering its an old car that has had modifications..

Why also are the owner selling it in the first place?

How much will it costs to the fix the bits.

So many question.. but I think you are set on buying the car that they won't matter. But just be prepared to waste alot of money on it. I would suggest you have a look around and don't be dazzled by the first car that comes along

When I got my first car, I was dead set on this one car. I was made to look around but I didn't really want it. I wanted my corolla. But if I had my time again, I would have looked at hundreds of more cars and waited a bit longer. I love my car, but it just reminds me of how impulsive I can be.

jake - here's your mission, if you choose to accept it.

you're 15, right? and you're planning on buying a car in the next xxx months, right? are you putting it in your name? if so - call your insurance company (or your mum's insurance company, obviously)..... find out how much it is to insure ANY vehicle when you are primary driver at 16. 10 bucks says it's better to spend your money on a bicycle. if the US is anything like up here, it is well over $300 per MONTH for a teen. get into an accident, and that balloons to $600 per month. if you think that's reasonable, then go for it

    Re: jaguar.

This is another reason I chose a scooter. My insurance is a whopping $25.80 per month. I am the carrier on the policy, sole driver, first plated vehicle, all sorts of good stuff. The scoot itself cost me $1500, I paid 500 in pocket money and took out a personal loan for the other 1000 (of which I owe only $533 currently, after 3 months of ownership).

This might seem off topic but I have had a positive enough experience in scooter ownership that I want to put in a word about it (and motorcycle ownership) as an "alternative option." No it's not as cool as an '87 Jag, but many get over the cool factor when they realize that filling up the tank costs about as much as a combo at McDonald's and gets better mileage...you save enough money to spend it on other cooler ****.

All the jag owners I know tell me these cars spend more time in the repair shops than any other car they have ever owned. Since they are so specialized you have to take them INTO a jag repair shop, not down the street to the local garage. Dreams are nice, but this ride has a very high upkeep!

    Re: jaguar.

Insurance is no where near 300 for me because I would be added to my moms policy and than she would add a car or something. I'm a little confused about that part. But, I'm not getting the car anyways. My grandma was going to get a car loan for me, through the credit union, but they don't do car loans on anything passed a 92.

    Re: jaguar.

In the future for reference. You should ask if it's really a rebuilt engine, as they are usually more then a new engine (or close to it). Most put in a junk yard engine and say it's "rebuilt" BUT there is a HUGE difference.
We just went through all of this with a Blazer we bought, had the thing checked out by a dealer, the owner of the Blazer claimed the engine was rebuilt, we bought it and 30 miles from her house the motor blew up. Turns out the dealership had put a junk yard motor in it, not rebuilt and we got a "too bad" from the previous owner. 2,000.00 MORE then what we spent to buy it we now have a Blazer that runs. We will never buy from a Private Party again. Here in MN there is no law for private party, so if you drive it a block and the motor falls out, too bad.

Wow It must have been a fancy car or it was yearly. Well my grandson we are raising his insurance is 150 a month he is driving a 2001 explorer and it is just for liability. We have a 3 car discount with state farm so insurance isn't cheep. His parents don't pay us child support either. His dad is a lazy bum and mom so far in debt but thats another subject

    Re: jaguar.

Just to add my 2cents worth of insurance info.

Depending on where you live, what state/province, your insurance rates will vary greatly.

    I drive a 2010 Hyundai Genesis
    Insurance rates are BC - $170/month Ontario - $180-245/month
That is my insurance based on almost 5 years of driving under my own insurance(once I hit 5yrs, there will be a discount) and with a 100% clean record.

IMO:The Jaguar, despite it being a sexy car, not worth it in the long run. Most rebuilt engines have a 90 day warranty, maybe less. Since it was rebuilt over 5 years ago, i HIGHLY doubt there will be any coverage on it. But, sometimes there are exceptions and plans for extended warranties.

Jaguar parts are ordered from Europe, so like everyone has mentioned, double even triple the parts cost. Not to mention, older vehicles might not even have the part available, or there will be a really long waiting time to get that part in...

Well, I'm not getting the car but I just had to ask a question. THe jag had been in florida for most of its life. My grandma said that she has heard that most cars in florida aren't rust proof. First, is that true? Second, if it wasn't, and it went through 5 winters and rain here than wouldn't it be rusty already?

Haha was waiting for laurne to reply

Don't touch that danm thing with a hundred foot pole.

Unless you can pull wrenches yourself, never buy anything that old.

I dont think any car comes from factory 'rust proof'. Think of it though. You buy from the ocean, it's gonna be rusty. You buy from the upper north east, they throw salt and water at it, gonna be rusty. Buy from arizona, not gonna be rusty.

If you want a 'starter' car, get some GM with a 3800 series II in it. Pretty much bullet proof (take it easy on the tranny. you don't want a 3 grand bill because you like to floor it at lights).

Regal, Grand Prix, Impala etc. Drive the balls of it till it dies. Easy to mod as well if you need to go fast.
