James, if you want to get a sense for the crazy flocks of cockatoos in Australia, hunt around for Matty's photography and videos. It's pretty cool!

On the kids and pets topic: I don't really see why kids should not have pets, provided the parents take financial responsibility and are supervising closely enough to ensure that the pet is being cared for.

I neeeed to live in Australia, I'm going to Di's house!

In Hong Kong we have a considerable feral population of sulphur crested Cockatoos and I get all yippee when I see one never-mind a whole flock

It's hard to imagine any of the wild species we keep as pets as being the equivalent to pigeons most places in the world. I still don't get the whole summer/winter thing in Oz (that was a technical word for me )

I agree it should be the whole family's responsibility...
But I had my own animals all my life from fish, axolotls, mice, hermit crabs, dog to now Benny.
I think it helped me grow up and learn responisbility.

True. I think your friend's situation brings up the point that any pet that "belongs" to the child should "belong" to the family enough that they can leave it with other family members and disappear for college/graduate school, if necessary.

I had a cockatiel as a child, who died when I was in high school; then I didn't get another bird until I entered graduate school and had some idea what my situation was going to be. This scenario seemed to work well.

    Re: 18 and UNDER section.

May I just add randomly to this conversation, when I was 12, I handreared my own parrot and he turned out just perfect. I also bred cockatiels and MY dog, which actually raised a couple of grand(the dogs were papillons)(still when I was 12) and that got me enough money to get my bird a cage measuring 102 x 79 x 177cm which is, pretty big I suppose, and I know many adults that have attempted handrearing birds and other animals and completely failed. I could never imagine being raised without pets, but I suppose everyone can have there views and I'm fine with that Going back to that Australia point, I just got back from there and I loved it The 'toos were gorgeous, if only we had them like that in New Zealand. I got some pretty cool photos, which I'll make a board about later
