Parakeet egg hatched!!!!!! ...now what?!

Hey guys!!

My female parakeet laid 4 eggs about 3 weeks ago and one of the 4 hatched..but now what??! do i have to hand-feed the babies? or will the female parakeet do that? my father said that the female parakeet will feed it but i dont think so my father also went to pets-mart and they said they doont have food for baby parakeets!

No leave it alone! You mean to tell me you think parakeets can only survive if people raise them....?? The parents will take care of it. Are they in a nest box? Give the parents lots of healthy, soft foods to make feeding easier. Go to google and type in breeding parakeets, get as much info as you can.

babies are a lot of work, I don't think breeding them was the best thing. Especially since you don't exactly know what you're doing.

on another note i'd separate your female and male parakeets so that you dont end up with LOTS of babies.

ok thanks guys I didnt know that they would have babies. cuz those guys used to fight alot.
what type of soft food should i give them?

ok seperate the male and female AFTER the babies are raised, the male helps the female feed and care for the chicks..

The male will get noticeably thinner due to feeding mommy so make sure you fill him up with soft foods as well as the mommy.

thanks alot guys. the budgies are about 3 weeks old and they are doing fine. i see the mama bird feeding it occasionally. im starting to see some light blue feathers. one problem is that one of the three babies leg is like twisted i think. its left leg is in place but the right isnt so its hard for it to walk. what shold i do?

I am no expert. Google splayed leg. I hope others who can help will be along.

Ok for a splayed leg what your going to want to do is make a hobble, here is a link to how to make one and how to put it on the baby. http://www.parrotparrot.com/splay/ You need to do it asap or it wont heal. Good luck. Also please seperate the parents after they are done with the babies, and if they stop caring for them then you will have to handfeed. If it comes to that PM me and I will try to help you learn how to do it properly. Its very very important that you do it perfectly, or you will kill the baby.

It happens, make the best of it. A little avice, coming from someone who is in the exact same position, righ now, mine just hatched 1 of her !3 eggs, i am suspecting the next to hatch within next couple of days. Do not disturb as much as you can, I know it's hard but they will take care of the babies, sometimes budgies will not and you have to "foster" them if you have other birds. The best thing to do is just let nature tske it's course, i been watching mine very close, the father and her will regeritate the food to feed the babies. you should make sure that there is lots of water and mineral block and i am going to put budgie babie food in so the parents can feed it to them, they will. It will be what it will be, Do what you can do If you want to chat, I am here, not to judge stuff happens. I am hoping mine will do ok as well, this is first time for me as well. Good-luck
