Doesn't want to stay in the cage.

Hello. I just got my cockatiel 2-3 days ago. Outside the cage he has fun, and even sits on me. He doesn't seem to be scared of me.

He is 6 weeks old. I'm having one problem though. He never wants to stay in the cage. When I put him back in (by making him step up on my finger) he will run around the cage. He always wants to come out. If I open the door even a little bit he will come outside.

How can I get him used to his cage? Is it just because he is new to his cage?

Well, consider it a good problem to have!!! So many new tiel owners have tiels that they can't get to come out of the cage! He will get use to the cage. He'd just rather be out with you!

Cockatiels are like potatoe chips....it's hard to have just one!

    That's good to hear.

The breeder said he'll get used to the cage after a while. It's awesome how he's not scared of my whole family in like 2 days. He will just fly and sit on top of us. Shows that the breeder did a good job.

Thanks for the help, Blue Baby.

How do you manage it when you're not home and can't let him/her out? Just ignore and he'll stop?

As once school starts I won't be able to keep him out all day.

Yep. Eventually he'll settle down. Just make sure as soon as you get home he knows it's time to get out and let him out.

I would also like to warn you about clipped wings on a chick, in case yours has it; mine was just as hyper when he was a chick...

Tiels are one of the most laid back and accepting of the different species of birds, generally. You can always leave a radio or tv on for "company" while you are away at school.

Thanks for the reply guys. He seems to calm down after a while, only if he is alone in the room though. If anyone, like my mom is there, he makes her open the cage.

Anyways, the wings are not clipped. He is fully flighted.
