Re: quail still wont lay eggs!?

I bought a pair of female quails around mid August, as of yet I've not had a single egg. Patience!

You can't force a bird to lay if it doesn't want to.

That's OK because I live in the UK...

Where are you housing them? Aviary, fish tank, rabbit hutch?

The best way to make it more natural for them is to put plants in and use a natural type flooring (like wood chip).

It doesn't need to be like it's natural environment, just as long as there's places to hide etc.

A lot of quail available now are incubator bred, it's easier, quicker and means the parents can have a new batch while they're being incubated. This means that over time they have lost their natural instinct to sit on the eggs and hatch them themselves.

My first set of quail used to lay eggs all around and just leave them, then after a few dozen eggs (months later) they worked out to pile them in one corner, making a semi nest. Then eventually they learnt to actually sit on the eggs (although they never sat long enough to hatch them).

    It takes time.

    cool thanx for your help.
i've added some hidy hutches and ferns and grassy bushes so they can hide in them and i covered the ground with a bit of soily sand and grass and woodchips (we had some in a bag left so hopfully my dad doesn't notice )

they are loving it and wont stop bathing in the dirt (they fluff up and shovel dirt into their wings. is this ok for them?)

thanx for your help. they are looking more at home.

yep, bathing in the dirt is their natural behaviour

LOL when I read up on quail when I first got them, all the websites said that they will not sit on their own eggs and I would need an incubator for any chicks... well, both pairs have hatched babies now, and one of the females is incubating her second lot of eggs now.... so they do know what they are doing!

Just give her some more time
