    Re: Canaries

first of all, forget budgie, think finch, as canaries are part of the finch family.

You can buy canary seed, altho finch will suffice for a short period. they dont really play with toys, but a mirror may be appreciated, not sure on that. Yep to cuttlebone, fruit and veg.

    And they love baths
They are quite easy to look after, and can be finger tamed (that's a bit tricky cos you can't clip their wings).
You can also buy 'song restorer' - a vitamin and mineral supplement to add to the food
Our canaries love greens and veggies

    Canaries

my father in law just bought a canary - no research done at all
    What are their requirements?
Are they similar to budgies inthat they need cuttlebone, fresh veggies/fruit and toys?
    What toys are best?

    TIA

    Re: Canaries

I am also thinking they need grit, correct me if I am wrong .

Anyhow, I found this, home.sprynet.com/~vmulcahy/feeding.htm which looked helpful, if the site is like that, it may be very helpful!

    Yep they need fine grit
oh, and they do like small toys. They don't play as much as budgies do, but they do like toys, especially swings

    Canaries

Canaries are not really like budgies coz they are finches! they love company thats why i have 2 canaries named Angel & jhonny, Angel has alredy laid 4 eggs and and the 1st one will hatch in four more days and male budgies dont really sing. but the boy canary loves to sing and the girl budgie sings too but the girl canary doesnt sing at all but they make perfect pets because the hen(FEMALE CANARY) lays eggs and the cock(MALE CANARY) loves to sing! :o thats all from me and be sure to get to know canaries more before letting them mate from Ylenia

    Re: Canaries

they actually don't NEED grit. I stopped giving grit to all our finches (zebra and canaries) last year, and they seem to be fine. They seem to hull their seeds like budgies do!
