Reptile heating pad
I went to the petstore for a heat lamp. the guy told me it will fry the chicks and not to use it. so i told him im putting them in a rubbermaid. He gave me a reptile heating pad that sticks to the glass. exact name is Exo-terra heat wave. but it says when i got hom only on glass. so now i need to buy a tank. Is this heating pad okay? it goes on the bottom/side outside of the tank.. its for the baby birds

Re: Reptile heating pad
ive only ever seen a heating lamp used for chicks.. if you cant get a proper heat lamp a 60W bulb is ok as long as they cant touch the glass.. ive never heard of heating pads for reptiles being used before. not saying that they arent a good thing though, ive just never seen them used. is it a full floor thing or just a small pad? because the lamp is used to regulate the temp evenly where as i see the pad either being to hard to get away from or having a cold spot on one side of the "nest". you dont have to use a tank, anything that can retain heat works well. they probably say use a tank because the reptile tank must stay between 22C-30C and the glass is not a very good insulator.

Re: Reptile heating pad
well i also thought maybe cause the pad would heat the plastic. This heating pad is 8X8 and 8 watts. its a terrarium substrate heater, idk. i might go return it.

Re: Reptile heating pad
I have used heating pads before too. Just make sure you keep a thick layer of shavings on the bottom so they don't get any contact with the glass as it could burn them. I always put a few layers of paper towels down, then a layer of shavings, and then another layer of paper towels. You can change the paper towels out easily as they will use the bathroom quite a bit while growing up and make a mess!
I always put the heating pad on one side of the aquarium. So there was a cooler side and a warmer side in the brooder. This way the baby could decide which side to sit on. They usually stayed in the middle of the tank. Keep the tank partially covered with a towel too. Just make sure you keep a close eye on the temperature and the humidity. Very important when they are young.

Re: Reptile heating pad
When I was raising quails, I used a heat lamp (got it at a feedstore, it's just a metal dome) and a red 60 watt bulb.
For the first week I had it resting on some upright bricks (so maybe 10 inches from tank bottom and keep it mind these chicks were the size of large marbles). Right underneath it was 105 degrees (a bit too hot) but the other side of the tank was fairly cool. I didn't have a tank lid at the time, but I'd say it would be better to have the lamp further up than I had it.

Re: Reptile heating pad
The heatign pad is at 80 degrees. I put a cover over it now and figured id place a blanket/towel in there to keep extra warmth. Im goign to add baby number one in there in 4 days. Im going by a chart i found online. Temputure for the baby's age is 81 degrees. so i figured when there about that age ill add them cause thats all the heating pad does.

This is a really good link on the temperature of the broooder, as well as how many cc's of formula you should be giving the baby a day.
GOOD LUCK!

Re: Reptile heating pad
I've shared this before, but it was a very long time ago. They're a bit pricey at about $150, but having a safe and consistent way to control the temperature for your little ones is priceless. They fit right on a 10gallon fish tank making a wonderful brooder.

Re: Reptile heating pad
I have been breeding for nearly 2 decades and I use a terrarium with a reptile heating pad under it for a brooder. The babys stay in there from two to three weeks old to weening, while I am handfeeding. I have found that this works very well for me. I use corn cob for bedding and add a piece of felt in the corner where the heating pad is. Then I just replace the felt daily as it gets soiled. I also use the terrarium for "display" when I get ready to sell the babys that I am not holding back, because it looks nice. Good luck and blessings Ruth

Re: Reptile heating pad
I use a heat pad below under 1/3 of the brooder and a heat lamp overhead. both are connected to the thermostat. It works well for me.
