    Bald Spot

Hello! I just got a friend for my cockatiel. However, on the way home, I noticed that just behind her mohawk is a pretty obvious bald spot. Now i'm afraid that she may be sick with something and am holding off on introducing her to my birds. What should I do?

    Re: Bald Spot

Congrats on your new fid! Is she by any chance a lutino? That mutation is known for having a bald spot on the back of the head. Do the rest of her feathers look OK? And, was she in with her parents or other flockmates? They could have plucked her head a little.........

In any event, you may want to quarantine the new bird away from your current birds for 30 days, that is recommended

I don't know what a lutino is... when I picked her up she was alone. No other birds around to pick her feathers. And yes, the rest of her feathers are perfectly fine.

Lutinos are usually all white and yellow.... very pale, no brown or gray. And reddish eyes. I will try to find a picture

    This is a lutino:

And, I THINK, even if she is only part lutino, she could still have the bald spot. Someone else will probably come along that knows more about this than I do!

Ah yes, she is a Lutino. I called the previous owner and he said it was natural. Which is kinda weird but I'm just glad she's healthy!

Oh, that's good! Yes, for some reason lutinos usually have that bald spot.

    Re: Bald Spot

You should still do a 30 day quarantine! Illness can be masked and not show up for weeks. I'd hate for your current baby to possibly get sick!

Cockatiels are like potatoe chips....it's hard to have just one!
