    Week and sleepy lovebird

One of my two lovebirds has a problem with it's health. It seems normal, the feathers too, but it is very weak and sleepy, when it tries to fly, it falls, although it is afraid of me, I can catch it. Any idea what is happening?
It had laid 5 eggs and after 3 months 8 eggs (all infertile). The last time it laid eggs was 2-3 months ago. Could there be a vitamin deficiency?
    Thank you

it could be vitamin problem, exhaustion, illness or an egg she can't lay.
Whatever it is- she needs a vet

Thanks Lee for the adorable sig!

Your little lovie needs to be seen by a vet because it does sound like it is sick. If you read this post it will tell you how to make a hospital tank to keep it warm which is the best thing you can do for a bird when its not well. Here is the post: http://www.tailfeathersnetwork.com/b...n/firstaid.php

Please try to take it to the vet.

I agree with Deanna. It seems likely your bird is very sick and can only be helped by a vet.

A vet told me to give Tetraclycline and Vitamins. He didn't see the bird. That is what I am doing now.. He said 99% the bird will be OK.

I think you need to find a better vet who will do a diagnosis with an examination, instead of over the phone. Would you trust a doctor who did that? I hope your little one isnt egg bound because that could be fatal.

The vet isn't very good to be administering antibiotics and making a diagnosis like this over the phone sight unseen, hope you find an avian vet that knows what they are doing.

Agree with what the others have said. A GOOD vet will not diagnose over the phone but insist on seeing the bird. And make sure you go to an avain vet as well. Hope your lil one pulls through okay.

    Re: Week and sleepy lovebird

I went to a vet today morning an it died in his hand as he was examining it... He said it was thin, so it could be parasites.
So now, I know it started much earlier than I noticed it was sick, I had noticed it was a lot of time in the nest and quieter, but thought it was ready to lay eggs.
I could have gone to the vet 3 days earlier as soon as I noticed something is going wrong, but I could not imagine it would end like this so soon. I wonder if the bird would be alive now, if I went to the vet on Friday...

I'm sorry to hear about your lovebird. That vet who told you "A vet told me to give Tetraclycline and Vitamins. He didn't see the bird. He said 99% the bird will be OK." should be yelled at.

As I am told the vets here have no experience with little birds. Yesterday I asked where to go with my bird and I was told to go to a specific pet shop in a city near mine that sells only birds and the owner is the most experienced in my area in small bird cases. Of course he is not a doctor. That is what I did.

I am so sorry for your loss of your lovie, may he be in peace now

It is sad when you cannot find a vet to treat them and you did do what you could for your bird. Its sad that birds are overlooked as something that vets in different countries treat, here in the US we have many vets to choose from and for you how sad there was none who knew birds. Since the person you ended up taking your bird too wasnt a avian doctor honestly they may not have been able to help you out either so taking him in on Friday may not have helped him any more then you did at home.

    Again, sorry for your loss.

Please try not to blame yourself, you did what you knew to do at the time. It least you know you have a good person to turn to if your other lovie has troubles.
