    Sick Bird--22FEB UPDATE!

Hey everyone. It has been quite a while that I've been on here.

I recently adopted another Tiel. He was abandoned by the previous owner an has a bit of a medical problem with this wings. I took him into the vet when I first got him and they took care of him. Then this weekend he went down hill. He was at the bottom croner of his cage, sleeping an fluffed up most of the weekend, only eating a little. I took him to the vet this morning and we realized he lost 9 grams (from 80g to 71 since january 23rd!). The problem is that they don't have a specialist at the clinic today. However I left Jalen there and he is now in an incubator at 88 degrees. They are trying to call a specialist in but if she can't come in they will set me up with another specialist in the area. At least he is there now where the techs are keeping an eye on him. I'm so worried though... I love him so much. He has the sweetest personality for what he has gone through...

Thanks Laurie. It is incredible how sweet he is. He just cuddles and wants to be loved. I was told by the vet when I initially took him in that his medical problems with his wings are the result of neglect and possible abuse. This is so upsetting and I just hope we can get him better some. I believe he may have some sort of infection in his tiny body. I'm just so worried about the 9 gram weight loss.

    Thank you Rhonda and Ellen.

The vet just called me. Jalen cracked a few seeds and is eating some millet. He does not seem do be taking in fluid so they are giving him some subcutanious fluids. The vet is still on the road but it sounds like she will be coming in to take a look at him. I am about to head down there shortly anyway to pick up my dog. She had surgery today (spaying). I may not be able to take my birdy home tonight. Oh by the way his name is Jalen But he will be in better hands with them than with me.

Good to see you back on here - but so sad that Jalen is sick. I really hope that he comes through this. He is so lucky to have found someone as loving and caring as you! Good luck!!

Thank you Ellen! I just saw youre lovely chicks!

When my sister and I first saw Jalen we knew he was going to have some problem that required good continous vet care. He was so sweet and incedibly tame considering the home he had come from. We took him with us right away because we were scared the someone who just wanted a tame pet would take him without intentions of thaking him to the vet (which happens so often here in Cali). I'm just happy that I am fortunate enough to have a stable job and that there is absolutly no problem with vet expenses. I just hope I can have him back home soon.

Sometimes the "special needs" birds are the best! Our Sid is super cuddly, and I know Milover's special needs finch is a sweetheart. Best of luck!

    Re: Sick Bird

    Thank you Sara!

So when I picked my dog up our vet clinic reffered us to another great specialist. So we went there. Jalen had an X-ray done first. They are worried about some sort of metal poisoning. The X-ray was clear abd it gave them the oppertunity to look at the other organs. They are good. So next was a DNA probe to test for Chlamydia. The vet said that his symptoms look like this may be a possibility. This is incredibly scary for me as I have 7 other birds in the house. Although treatable, it is highly contagious. Then to finish Jalen off he got a nice big shot of Doxy (an antiB). So overall Jalen has cost me 600 dollars today! WOW! But he is so sweet and I believe it is all worth it.

So now he is home. I bought a heating pag that I will put by his cage for extra warmth. Also turned my heat to 77 degrees to make sure the air temerature is good. Hopefully he responds to the anti Bs.

Oh and it looks as if he is a "special" bird. He just never developed properly. This will be the final diagnosis if everything comes back fine. I will take him in again in a few days for a blood panel. He is just so weak and we didn't want to do it yet.

Here are some photos of the cage I set up for him. It's in my bedroom so he is away from the other birds. Now you also know what my little cutie looks like

OH! And I was able to get him to drink some water. He is perching too

    What a sweet baby

So, they think it's chlamydia, but you're still waiting on test results? Sorry if I haven't read your post properly, it's late

    Feel better soon, little Jalen!

Ellen that's correct. The DNA test will take about a week to come back but they will rush it.

Do you guys think it will be okay if I put the heating pad on top of the cage and cover three sides?

Just keep it on the medium heat setting, so it doesn't get too warm. As long as there is still some good air flow, it should be fine. Also make sure there is plenty of water in the cage, just in case Jalen gets thirsty with the extra warmth.

Done Thank you. Wow it is soooo hot in the house. I put the air on 77 so it stays at or abose that for Jalen. I am burning up though but the animals love it, lol. I got him to drink more water too and he is still perching. When I put the water in front of his face and splash around with my figer he takes a sip.

Good that he seems to be doing well.

If you have a humidifier, that would be good to run too. If not, don't worry about it.

Jason would be dying if it were that warm in here. He is ALWAYS warm.

    Re: Sick Bird

I'm hoping it isn't Chlamydia, and he is just "special".

I was doing some research, and found this:http://www.avianbiotech.com/Diseases/Chlamydia.htm
Some of the symptoms are kind of.... common for anything. But it does mention things like nasal discharge, occasional conjunctivitis, & "greenish diarrhea".
You didn't mention any symptoms like that. And I noticed in the first picture that his droppings look a little watery (to be expected after subcutaneous fluids), but definitely brownish. And he looks a little fluffed up, but he is perching.
Also, our special needs tiel, Sid, fluffs up often. He didn't develop properly, he has major foot issues, vision problems, small size, and just generally "slow". Sometimes he will fluff up for hours. But there is nothing wrong with him, other than the developmental issues.

    Re: Sick Bird

Sara! So lets talk about the chlamydia first. Jalens urates were very greenish yesterday before the fluids. He also has nasal discharge that he has had that gets crusty and stuffs him up. His poops were also very green so the symptoms could mean chlamydia. At least the DNA is pending and if it is this, it will suck as I have other birds but at least we will have a diagnosis and it's TREATABLE!

About him being special needs. What you described with Sid is exactly what I am experiencing with Jalen! He is always stepping on his own feet, has developmental problems. Some of his wing feathers never developed properly. He is also very slow and the vet mentioned yesterday that he doesn't seem to be seeing very well. Jalen is also a very small bird weighing in between 71-80 grams. So maby it's simply this! If it is then I will make his setup easier and I hope to God that it is just that. Thank yuo for your post and explaining Sids symptoms.
I was wondering is Jalen's chlamydia comes back negative, if we can get together so we can possibly compare the two?

Dea! How are you? Everything going well with you and the family? Thank you for the well wishes.

It is so nice to know that so many of you are keeping us in your minds. I'm just so anxious for the DNA results. But for now he is in my bedroom seperate from the others.

    Re: Sick Bird

I really do hope it isnt chlamydia, even though it is treatable it still wouldn't be a good thing for either you or your fids. Jalen sounds like a little sweetie who thank God found you to take care of his sweetness I for some reason just melt when a bird is "special".

We are fine here Lisa, finally enjoying some sunshine and loving it!

    Re: Sick Bird

Thanks Dea, I really hope it isn't either. I just read the info Sara gave me and it sounds rather nasty especially how it can just live outside the host. When Sara explained Sid symptoms it really makes me think of Jalen because everything her Tiel has, I see in Jalen. This gives me hope. If Jalen is stronger on saturday he will probably go in for the blood panel but we'll see. We may just wait for the fecal and DNA and then if they are both negative I'd like to do the panel just so we have done everything under the sun, lol.

Sarah, do you notice Sid having nasal discharge too? I am just curious as it seems so be a problem with Jalen having this and it getting crusty.

Last night was rough. It seemed like I was up every 30-60 minutes checkin on him. One time he fell of his perch and he woke me up. It is soooo hot in my house too! Ahhh, lol.

I can't wait to get home to him!

Sid has never had any nasal discharge. But that may just be a part of him that did develop properly.

When you get the results, we will definitely have to get Jalen & Sid together. The first thing you will notice about Sid are his TINY feet. But he is a sweetheart, and we love him!

    Re: Sick Bird

have they got him on pro-biotics too? I;m just thinking with the stress and anti-b's he is already on he's obviously more at risk of thrush and yeast problems. I'm wondering if the vet would think some ACV in water would be a good preventative measure?

I really hope he gets better and comes home soon x

PS just a thought. If he hasnt quite developed properly and isnt too steady on his feet could can he get his feet up to pick his nose clean? I've known birds with deformities who couldnt do that, so often got dust and seeds and whatever up their nares and would get snotty noses because of it. Might be worth a quick clean up job with some cotten buds and warm water. Will make him feel better in any case to not be so bunged up. Obviously if he isnt happy being handled it's not worth the extra stress.

Thanks Lee for the adorable sig!
