Ollies either got some sort of mite or a dodgy feather on his back, help!

O.k firstly I have made a vets appointment, but it's not until Monday as our vet only works part time.

Everytime Ollie preens his back (right between his wings, think between our shoulder blades) he cries out in pain. I have no idea what it could be and had a look and can't see any mites around his eyes, under his feathers or around his feet. Also can't see any loose feathers, so Im stumped!

Obviously Im guessing the vet will be able to help but any ideas on if I can try anything to help sooth him until monday? Poor little dear is hurting (and yes he has millet as a treat and is getting lots of scritches)

Is he maybe experiencing a heavy molt and has lots of little pinfeathers? They seem to lose the most feathers right between their wings. I'd try misting him with cool water mixed with some aloe. My tiel will squeal if I am rubbing behind her head and she is molting. It hurts them and if you look closely you can see the blood in the feather and feel how stiff it feels. Think of a little pin going into your skin everytime you move or reach around to scratch your back.

Poor baby..........hope you can make him feel better.

nym does this too every time she preens her wings. she'll scream in pain, attack her foot and then go back to preening.. once shes screamed 3 or 4 times in pain she leaves it alone.. i think its also frustration in the fact that she cant preen properly.. vet has said that she just preens too hard.

I thought it was a molt at first but he hasnt lost any feathers, so it's not that! Lol.

Hoping the vet will have some suggestions as the poor thing is doing it constantly now

On an un-related topic: Sammit can I send you a message regarding some Australia related questions?

Been to the vets and she couldnt find a thing wrong with him!

Said his feathers are fine, no pins coming through, no redness no marks nothing!

She treated him for mites 'just in case' but said she cant think what is wrong.

The only thing that came to her mind was that he may have hurt himself in his cage (flying fit) and hurt his spine. But she said theres no way to tell without putting him under, which she doesnt want to do! (and neither do i!)

But shes given me some anti inflamitories in the hope that may solve it.

    But its a mystery!
