    Exclamation Missing feathers, Please HELP!

    Hi All.

My beautiful boy Nibbler has been spending time scratching his back, which has been going on the last couple of days. When I let him out this morning for his morning fly I noticed he was missing some feathers from the top of his tail and just above where his tail starts.

I am not sure if he is board or if it is something else. He is still eating heaps and talking away, he has lots of toys. I'm just not sure what to do.

    Any help would be great.

    Thanks
    Karen

That's where his preen gland is. Is it possible he has some infection or irritation there? If so, a visit to the vet would be a good idea.

definately time to visit an avian vet i;m afraid.
If he had just had an accident and knocked them out i'd not be worried, but the fact that he is scratching is bad. It could be that he's hurt himself there and it's not healing right, or his preen gland has become infected and needs clearing, an impacted feather, he could have mites, or even just a spot or something equally simple. Whatever the case is i think he needs to see a vet to check for medical issues and cure them. there's about 2 dozen reasons i can think of that causes picking.

Can you handle him well? Will he let you look and see what's going on there?
Also you can put white paper in his cage overnight- that's when mites are most active and you might see them on the paper in the morning

whatever it is though- a vet is the best call!

Thanks Lee for the adorable sig!

I think your Nibbler is fairly young, only 11 months correct? And I believe you're also fairly new to bird ownership, would that also be correct?

Take a look at the feathers he has lost. Do they appear to be twisted or chewed on/apart? Can you see his skin below the missing feathers? If so, is the skin red or irritated?

If the answer to these questions is no, it is possible that Nibbler is going through his first big moult! This can be a scary time for new bird owners (again, I'm assuming, so if I'm wrong please do correct me). Your bird will be itchy and irritable and they will be losing what seems to be huge amounts of large feathers and may end up looking a bit scruffy for a while.

However, if the answer to any of the above questions is a yes, then you may need to consult a vet. Many things could be causing Nibbler to be worrying at his feathers, including behavioral issues or skin infections.

Hopefully it's just a moult. I'll be crossing my fingers for you and the bub!

    Thanks all.
Nibbler's feathers are starting to grow back now. I have been keeping a very close eye on him and I am taking him to my vet, just in case.
My little lovie turns 2 in 15 days and he must look his best for his birthday!
    Thanks again.

Make sure he gets lots of nice baths- preferrably with Aloe or something soothing in it. when a lot of feathers grow back at once it can stretch the skin and pull it making it pretty irritable and uncomfy! It's good they are coming back so he is super gorgeous.

Then can we have a birthday photoshoot? we're pic addicts lol

Thanks Lee for the adorable sig!
