    Chewing on Wires!

Hello, I just found that my cockatiels are chewing on the wires under my desk. I'm afraid that if they break to the wire they might get shocked. How can I keep them from doing this? Any suggestions? Maybe a spray that makes the wires taste awful??

    Re: Chewing on Wires!

Honestly, there is no way to make a bird stop chewing wires... except to watch them lol

You can buy plastic coating for wires, like they sell for house-bunny homes. And when you see them chewing, say "No" calmly and move them to an appropriate chew toy.

My bird I have _mostly_ broken from chewing on wires, just by occupying him with other toys.. but sometimes he'll still see it and go "oooh, chew toy".

You could also try putting something they are scared of by the wires, like a stuffed animal or blanket.

I used to throw a towel over ours here because if they are like boomer was as soon as you turn your back they will back down on the floor chewing the wires again.

I just REALLY watch them but a towel is a great idea. Boomer is alwaays on my desk so is Chiquita and they love the wires but I distract them with lots of toys.

    Re: Chewing on Wires!

I had to keep a towel over the wires and a smaller one on my mouse wire because if I didnt it was my boomers favorite "bad" thing to keep on attacking. If the towel wasnt there he would keep on trying all day to get the dang mouse wire. If your boomer and Chiquita is like my boomer Courtney he will try to squeeze there body under the towel to get to whatever is hiding below so you will still need to watch them.

Okay, thanks Deanna, I will do that for sure and keep an eye on them. Chiquita has already chewed a camera and a mouse.

    Re: Chewing on Wires!

Birds love to chew. Fortunately ZoZo doesn't mess with the wires anymore. He would try and I would go get him and tell him no, bad, in a stern voice and now he leaves them alone. Instead of trying to chew on wires, he just pops the keys off my laptop and takes off with one!!! The biggest problem I have with him is cooking. Whenever he gets near my stove, whether it is on or not, in a stern voice I tell him no, hot and he takes off. It is constant reinforcement but it seems to work. Good luck!!
