    Is she egg-bound? Need help!

I have been waiting for help for several days in the finch/canary section, but only got one reply. I need to know if she looks egg-bound. The lump is not hard, just warm and squishy, and when she breathes, it moves like your chest does when you breathe. I thought this was odd, and now I'm torn between "she's egg bound or getting there" and "she's just displaying and because she's plucked it looks larger than it is."

What do you guys think? Please help. A vet visit will be $80+ and I don't want to NOT go and have it be too late. But at the same time, I dont want to spend $80 just because I'm worrying too much.

I know it's a terrible photo, but if she is egg bound, I dont want to stress her out trying to take her picture. I will try to get better photos tomorrow, but please help!

I don't really have any experience with egg-binding but to me that looks pretty serious already and if I were you I would have gone to a vet long ago...

Well, with my experience with Tini, a lovie, warm and squishy usually means pre-egg. She looks like she is getting ready to lay an egg, especially adding the squishy part - but that's based on lovie experience. I don't have finch experience, and especially experience with a bird that has plucking issues or whatever you rescued this little one from.

I would suggest this...if she is active and eating and pooping, I would give her a couple more days. Put her in a hospital cage perhaps? Give her the heating element, water close by, etc. Also, given that you can catch her, if it won't stress her out too much, perhaps giving her some mineral oil orally will help her pass an egg if she does have one. Whenever Tini gets eggy, it's the first thing I do. I give her .05ml per night and she weighs about 57g.

My only concern is that she WAS with egg and that it might have burst. BUT if she is acting normally then that is unlikely.

I hope that you can find the answers you're looking for. Good luck!

I just went through this with a finch and we ended up losing her. It had turned squishy after being hard. Broken egg. We had to put her down after the vet tried to fic the problem. She was a temp foster that I had. I felt just awful.

She updated in this other thread - apparently the little bird has liver swelling due to infection and it is pushing everything down, but no egg:
