    The wire mesh question.

    Hello!
I'm currently building an aviary for the little 'uns and the time has nearly arrived for the mesh to be purchased.
I apologise as this question has been asked before, but there seems to be diasgreement and apparent falsehoods in the various sources I have come across.
So, if I was purchasing mesh, what am I looking for? What are the criteria that you look for when purchasing? Finally, has anyone used glavanised mesh without any unfortunate incidents?
    Many thanks,
    Aviv.

    Re: The wire mesh question.

I have always used 1/2" by 1" welded wire for my breeding cages as well as my flight pens. This is small enought that rats can not get in, but snakes and mice can. It's heavey duty enough that hawks and owls can hit the top and the wire will not give. It is thick enought last many years without rusting IF you paint it. I suggest using a dark color - black or dark green. This makes it easy to see the birds in fight. I would suggest you use a roller brush, not spray paint - you will get more paint on the wire rather than in the wind.

    Re: The wire mesh question.

    Thanks for the response Kerry.
    So galvanised mesh is acceptable?
I think painting over it is a good idea. The thing I have no idea about however, is the type of paint. The wooden structural support has all been painted using a paint that one would normally use on such things as sheds and fence panels and is apparantly safe for wildlife. I'm not sure if the same paint can be used on the wire.
    What paint did you use?
    Many thanks,
    Aviv.
