Introducing Martin to a new cage
Martin will be getting a new, larger cage this week, to replace his current one. Thing is, he has been in this cage since I first got him - over 5 1/2 years ago. - so he is quite attached to it. How should make this transition a smooth one? What is the best way to do this?

Re: Introducing Martin to a new cage
I would say just gradual introduction and LOTS of bribery
Have him playing with his favourite toys on top of the new cage or in it, then if he shows distress, remove him.
See how he is and y ou never know, he may adjust quicker than you think.

Re: Introducing Martin to a new cage
I don't know how Martin would react, but when I get larger cages for my birds, I generally try to keep color the same. At least something will look familiar!
Depending on stress level, you may have to start with the new cage all the way on the other side of the room and slowly move it to where you be locating it. This is what I have to do with my Amazons. Once the cage is next to the current cage, I would allow Martin to have access to it so that he can get used to it. New toys and interesting food (particularly his favorites) should catch his attention and make the new home inviting. I know how I feel when I have to move and change homes. It's pretty much the same for birds. The cages may have to stay side by side for a while, again, depending on comfort level.

I would also make sure his favorite treats have been "found" in the new cage for a few days before moving him in. Maybe put a favorite toy or two in there too, just make it look like a fun place to hang out so he gets comfortable with it before he has to be in it.

Re: Introducing Martin to a new cage
i pretty much set the new cage up with Sammy watching, put his favourite toys and treats in there and let him go in a out as he pleased for a few days. the HUGE door helped. Moved more toys over, and set food and water up in there and after about 4 days Sammy didnt want to go back to the small cage and was like a rocket to the big one. Only issue was having both large cages set up at once- only for a couple of days though

Thanks Lee for the adorable sig!

Re: Introducing Martin to a new cage
Agreed, gradual, and have new cage set up, with a couple familiar accessories, foods, and letting him explore it on his own time/terms. It shouldn't take long.
Be sure to post pictures Dan!

Re: Introducing Martin to a new cage
What a pain this cage has been. We had to get a new metal layer on it a while back and all day yesterday and today (in addition to TF work!) we have been working on sanding it down etc. Then it is time to wash a few times etc. Hopefully by tomorrow it will be done!

I have ordered a couple new perches and toys from the web and am waiting until those have arrived and been put in place before taking photos. So only a few more days!
