    Re: what nuts are safe

I don't think there are any nuts that are unsafe for birds. However, but some birds love them so it can be easy to overfeed them. Peanuts are particularly fatty and so these have to be limited. My birds like Walnuts and won't touch almonds, although I am told many birds will eat almonds and that they are healthy.

    Re: what nuts are safe

I would alter that just a tad and say that nuts that are safe for humans are safe for birds too, because there are plenty of tree nuts that are poisonous (humans don't eat them either).

Also, we don't feed peanuts over here because they come with the risk of Aspergillus infection. I do give peanut butter occasionally when I make a sandwich or something with it, but we never give whole peanuts or even treats that come packed with peanuts (like a trail mix or something).

There is a topic in FAQ (under General Bird section) that lists nuts & their nutritional value. Here

    Re: what nuts are safe

For a Quaker you might have to partially crack (if in the shell) the shell of the harder nuts for them. Our Quakers have an almond they sit on, haven't cracked it and won't let me remove it. Once in a while they try and crack it, but if I try and grab it to crack it for them, they attack. So I gave up.

    Re: what nuts are safe

Here is a great article on nuts I know many are fearful of feeding a lot of nuts an while it is true all things should be fed in prportion and not over done just like in our own diets portion sizes and control is important.
When a bird is molting they can really use the extra protiens and good fats found in nuts.
more on the good and bad fats and nuts that are good to feed found here
