Breathing problems again maybe
I don't know if this is the same issue Martin had for a few months when I first brought took him over to Sweden, but it seems like maybe it is happening again. It is chillier in this flat than in Sweden so maybe he has a cold or something (what temps are ok for birds in flats anyway?)?
Today his nose was runny, which is the first time this has happened, but for the last few days, his poos have been SO wet. Other than that he has seemed fine, so I was hoping the poos were nothing, but the nose issue today made me so discouraged - especially since they never quite figured out what happened a couple years ago (and also since it cost me a FORTUNE).
He has a vet check up on Thurdsay, hopefully they will be able to enlighten me a bit then.

Re: Breathing problems again maybe
I hope your bird is well... Do you weigh him at least weekly? My apartment stays around 68 degrees F in the winter and 78-80 degrees F in the summer. I've noticed recently Amira's droppings have been very wet sometimes (usually when they land on my shorts), and other times considerably dry. I think a lot has to do with the diet. But, as I said, hope all turns out well

Re: Breathing problems again maybe
His weight has been fine; 19-20 (about 66-6 is probably the coldest it gets in here, during the night during the summer, but that is just a guess. (No heaters during the summer, and summers in Scotland are chilly! During the winter it gets quite toasty in here.)
Sometimes he goes to sleep during the day which is odd, but he seems to compensate it by having so much energy at other times, so I haven't thought too much of that.
Will keep everyone updated after Thursday when we go to the vet.

Re: Breathing problems again maybe
I wonder if he has allergies, I have read stories about birds with allergies and Martins troubles seem like maybe he might have them. Hopefully this time they will know for sure what it is so they can treat it and hopefully make it never come back again. The wet poos don't sound good, your right.

Re: Breathing problems again maybe
Doesnt he usually sleep in the day? Are you always at home to watch?
Every bird i know naps in the day- although Martin is the only of his kind i know in person- but i cant see it being any different.
i hope you called golden valley and got them sorted lol
Could it be a moult thing? over here Sammy gets really wet droppings when he moults- like PUPD wet. Spent a fortune- and while we know his white blood count is low- there's no sign of anything else and he's had every test we could easily run. My vet is talking about doing PBFD and Polyoma tests as it's usually viruses that cause this- but he already tested clear with another surgery through PALS lab (pretty well known over here). So the best guess is all this wet droppings thing is a moult thing. So from now on when he's moulting we're going to put him on higher potency foods and see if it stops him getting run down. I cant help wondering if its something similar with Martin- maybe last year was just a good moult for him?
have you checked around for mould? I know that one is guilty of causing allergies in lots of people. Cant imagine why birds couldnt be allergic too
As to tempretures- i've always worked on comfortable for me is comfy for him. Yeah their body tempreture is higher than us, but they gots miles of feathers to compensate. If you're needing a thick jumper or coat- it's cold. Just watch them- tempreture is pretty easy to read- but that's what i've generally found. Maybe whack some heat on though, as he's under the weather.
hope it goes well tommorrow x

Thanks Lee for the adorable sig!

Re: Breathing problems again maybe
Thanks.
We have been home a lot recently and he normally does not sleep during the day, but like I said, he also super active other times, so I don't know!
Figured Golden Valley would not appreciate me using them so soon after purchase, so I haven't called yet lol.
The breathing thing only happened once and has not happened again, so hopefully it was nothing. But the wet poos in particular are still really concerning me.

Re: Breathing problems again maybe
I think Helen may be may be right. I've noticed Kringle's poo is wetter lately. I was thinking it is because she drinks more when it is hot, but really we have an air conditioner so it is not hot in the house. She IS molting though, so that very well could be it!
I'm also surprised Martin doesn't usually nap. Kringle and Sully do!

Re: Breathing problems again maybe
When boomer molted he got sick every time because of his medical issues, molting always was super hard on him. This may sound funny but at times when he got a runny nose we would look into his nostrils and lots of times a tiny new feather would be coming in around his nostril and instead of it growing up and out it bent right down into his nostril. Once we picked it out of his nose he usually would be all better.

The vet said everything looks fine from what she could see/feel. She has sent a poo sample to the lab though. Will be back mid next week.

Re: Breathing problems again maybe
poop?
Wouldnt it be better to check the other end and do a nare/beak swab?
Good news that she thinks everything looks/feels good- and i'm guessing his chest is clear too.

I guess that will be the next step if this returns normal?
Though his poos this evening have been more solid, which is good! Will keep an eye on it.

Re: Breathing problems again maybe
I have had this same problem with Juno since I got her last Sept. I did numerous tests with the vet and she came back with inconclusive results. She was put on a round of antibiotics in the beginning but it really didn't do much in the way of ridding her runny nares. She was healthy in every other way and they did do a swab test as she had the runny nares at the time of her 2nd vet visit. She doesn't have it all the time but just off and on throughout the time that I've had her. It's been a year now and I'm thinking that maybe pionuses are sensitive to air quality? She seems to do much better in summer with some fresh air than in winter.

Re: Breathing problems again maybe
Today Martin had the breathing problems for the second time. Not very frequent but still, annoying!
The poos have been a bit better recently, but still quite wet.
Still been the perky, normal-acting Martin for the most part though! Was active and partying all day.

Martin's bacteria count is high in his poop, so I have to go back to the vet today to get some antibiotics. Ten-day cure.

Nope. He is on Baytril now, though! Just gave him the first dose, and he cooperated really well.
