Why you shouldn't give up on your bird and fresh foods

I have offered my bird carrots off and on for a year. He has thrown them at me, spit them out, thrown them off the desk, ignored them, turned his beak up at them (quite literally, he gives a great impression of a spoiled child) and otherwise shown he hates them.

Today... he picked up a piece of carrot and devoured it, the whole slice. It only took a year for him to get in the mood to eat it.

Congratulations - your two year old (childwise) is finally eating his veggies!! My newest Quaker is just getting used to things other than seed and I'm happy to say that she will try new things as long as they are presented in a dish that she recognizes as a food dish. She won't take new things off my finger but she will try new things in a bowl and she has tried banana without a bowl. Woohoo. It's the little things in life ...

Good job! Hopefully my budgies will get the same idea about their veggie mix I have been offering them. I find with Koko and Kasper they like me to hold it in front of them for them to nibble on, that way they get the taste and can become familiar with it.

Thanks for posting this, it gives me some encouragement to keep trying.

Hehe thanks. He eats other veggies (sweet potato, broccoli, spinach, lettuce, corn) but carrots he refused for soooo long. Now the battle is kale ... which is still in the throw it at mommy stage of acceptance.

But, even if they don't take to it immediately, at least eventually they come around!

I have to try like 20 different ways of preparing it - like broccoli is baked, steamed or shredded raw. Yes, shredded... not cut up. Carrots apparently are good shredded too. Sweet potato is in little tiny cubes. Spinach and lettuce has to be in full leaf, not broken up smaller. None of it can be cold, or hot, just room temperature. And of course, it cannot be wet, so the washed stuff has to go onto a paper towel to dry. If I had been this picky when I was a kid, my mother would have let me starve.

getting ours to eat the fresh veggies has been fun here too. greens must be hung; to get them to eat apples we have to clean the top of a table, slice the apples and then put the slices right on top of the table and turn our attention to something else. its almost like our fids hace to think that they are "sneaking" something. we have presented apples every other way under the sun and this i the only way they will eat them

Bella would gladly trample me to death for her raw veggies, especially raw kale and spinach (given in moderation). So I feel very lucky in that respect.

Raw corn on the cob is the main attraction in my house. If it still has the hair & leaves on it it improves its value tremendously. But broccoli is also appreciated - whole, not in pieces.

I can't wait to try serving the veggies and fruits we have been growing in our garden! We have pumpkins, potatoes, carrots, lettuce, beans, peas, corn, cucumber, tomatoes, turnips, melons, cantaloupe, spinach and maybe a few more. We also have Summer Savory, Sweet Basil, and Parsly growing in pots on our step. I know that a few of those aren't safe for budgies, but I'll definately enjoy the fresh fruits and veggies! We already tried a small carrot, and it was actually way better than store bought.

Yeah, fresh is tons better than store bought ... I love local farms that sell their stuff instead of selling it to stores, mmmm... freshly picked strawberries. *drool*

Congratulations! ZoZo loves his veggies, especially corn and peas. I have been fortunate as he is not a picky eater. He will eat whatever my husband and I eat. Of course everything in moderation. Sometimes if I want to be bad and have a non-healthy snack, I have to sneak as if I am a teenager!
