Lovebird has laid 4 eggs, what do I do?

I have a lovebird that has laid 4 eggs so far. She has built a nest and is keeping eggs warm. I also have a green cheek conure who is her friend. Our vet is fairly certain the conure is a male and lovebird a female. I am also thinking the same. The conure is over almost 2 years old and has never laid an egg. The lovebird is just over a year. They are in separate cages right next to one another. They play together outside the cages and in the conure cage for hours. Is it possible for them to breed?? I have read mixed messages online. I am not trying to breed them nor do I want too. But there are four eggs so far! Will the lovebird's eggs hatch? If so, what do I do? If not, how long do I let her sit on them? I have no idea when it comes to this situation. I had parakeets for years and they never laid eggs. Any information would greatly be appreciated! Thanks! Traci

Re: Lovebird has laid 4 eggs, what do I do?

I am thinking that conures and lovebirds are too distant in the evolutionary tree to hybridize. Conures are from South america, Lovebirds from Africa... and most (if not all?) of the parrot hybrids I've heard of are from two parrots at least from the same continent.

This is just a good guess on my part, but I doubt you'll be seeing babies from those two. In order to prevent your lovebird laying more eggs you should follow advice from other posts in the lovebird forum on how to prevent hormones/egg laying. From what I know it's best to let her sit on them until she abandons them or she'll just lay more.

My vet was sure Ham was a boy. Then Ham laid 6 eggs later in the year.

If you are worried, take the eggs and boil them, then put them back when cooled down and let her sit on them.
We got lots of Ham here

it's impossible that there are babies in the eggs.
these two kind are too much different for hope that the eggs will break them.
I advise you to let her sit on them about ten day then you can throw them.
however before to throw the eggs you have to check them through a small light. (in the life every thing can be possible also what that seems impossible)
I attached a pics so you can better understand what I mean.

Re: Lovebird has laid 4 eggs, what do I do?

Thank you everyone for your replies. I am glad that my birds will not have babies! Saying that I will check the eggs before tossing them just to make sure as you are right anything in life is possible even the impossible. The pictures you posted of the eggs are great. I will read on how to prevent hormones/egg laying also. I never thought of boiling them and that's a good idea also although I am afraid I will distress Tabitha too much if I try to take the eggs at this point. She is very aggressive and protective of them. Her cage aggression had become much less until she laid the first egg. Now it is 10 times worse than before so I think I'll wait until she abandons the eggs and then toss them but I will remember that advice for future reference. Thank you so much for the advice everyone.

Re: Update on Lovebird has laid 4 eggs, what do I do?

I have been waiting for Tabitha to give up on the eggs. That was just not happening. It has been 22 days since she laid the first egg. She has not been coming out of her cage but tonight she did. I grabbed the 4 eggs, candled them and they are duds! I can't say I am disappointed because I don't want baby birds. So for those of you who wondered if my green cheek conure and love bird were going to actually (although highly improbable) have babies. The answer is no. Tabitha does not seem overly upset that her eggs are gone either. I had to clean out her cage because she built a nest in the corner and I did not want her laying more. I thought she would freak out but she almost seems relieved. She is playing with her toys and eating at this point.

I am sorry! but I have always known that the probability was pratically equal 0 that the eggs was not fertiles.
Now I want advise you to read like to prevent the ormonal phase or if you want then you can buy another male loverbird.
