    Wolfie has fits :(

Hi , i have two cockatiels , but this post is about Wolfie. See Wolfie is a 2 year old very tame bird that we let him out and he fly's around the room and we can can stoke him, but nearly every time we let him out he fly's around the room like a maniac and then lands on the curtain pole by this time his wings are up in the air and he is swaying, so i can tell he is about to have a fit, now he has loads we have learned to hold him still and gently stroke him while talking to him in a soft voice. These fits last about 30 seconds to a minute , after he has had his fit we put him back in the cage and he goes really sleepy. These fits are really distressing to watch and it breaks my heart , its like he has asthma. Can anyone tell me what it is and if we can help him.

Could you please describe the actual fits? What does the bird do?

Yes, please more info. He flies around the room and then lands on a pole? What does he do then? Does he flap wildly about while in one place, or ..?

ok, well his head goes right back almost touching his wings , if he lands on the floor he does backwards gambols and flips , his wings are fully stretched and he flaps violently , before he has his fit his head goes round and round and also he loses balance. um... i dont know if this is enough, any help would be appreciated, thanks

    Re: Wolfie has fits :(

It sounds like he is having fits, or seizures and I am very sorry Wolfie is doing this. It sounds so awful to see and if he does it all the time it just couldn't be good for him but it least he has you there to hold him and help him through them. I knew a girl who had a African Grey parrot that had seizures almost daily but with a change in its diet and also medication from the avian vet my friend told me it didn't have so many seizures anymore. Sometimes they have them because there is something missing from the diet and sometimes it is because something is wrong with them inside and I do know a good avian vet may be able to help Wolfie out.
Fly Free Boomer, we will forever love you.

Indeed, sounds like it may be seizures. You should, if you can, take him to a vet and see if they can diagnose the cause. I'm sorry your baby is having problems, hopefully the vet can give you some medication to help him.
