Re: cockatiel laid another egg part 2

sorry Sandra and Marc one more question, this one is about parents.
they used to be let out several times a day,to be on my shoulder.now since i noticed Nana sitting on her first egg. i ' ve been only letting them out to poop then right back in(its weird how they'll hold it in,not wanting to go poop in cage any longer since eggs)so when i notice her/him( her exspeacially) looking out cage bars calling to me i let them out once finished back inside they go.they she eats, drinks then goes right back to eggs.he follows her but doesn't sit on eggs just protects them ,but hes made his nest on his side own on his side of nest box just in case she'd share eggs maybe.no eggs in his nest tho silly tiel i'm still waiting for him to steal an egg for his nest
    any ideas?

The more advice you get the better - I am by no means perfect. There is TF member you might also want to try and contact - srtiels - she has alot more experience than I do. Please keep us posted about how things go.

There was one thing I'd forgotten about the goose eggs - I believe they're shaken as well as turned, so whatever you do NEVER move them in such as way it could be interpreted as a shake (not that I think you would). Happy grandparenting ... ?

i read carefresh bedding is bad is that true?that paper hamster bedding
under that bedding there is paper towels. should i just stay with paper towel or both?
    what do u think?
she moves the bedding aside to place them on the paper towel alone, with bedding around creating a nest boarder.
will the eggs get chilled that way?or should i be sure they are surrounded by the carefresh bedding to maintain heat while shes off eggs.since last night she kept them surrounded by it but before that they were just on top paper towels.
i don't touch the eggs or bedding but am wondering which of the two would be better to do?
i really want her eggs to have best survival chances.

also what is the best temperature to have your house heat at to prevent problems with the eggs (chick getting stuck to inside of egg at hatch time ,etc.)?
in celcius temperatures please, not good with farenhight terms as i live in canada we use celicius here.

What I noticed w/Sonny & Peeps was that, even w/an open cage door, they would only leave the nest when they had to for food, water and, as you mentioned, pooping. Mom & Dad really do not poop inside the nest, they will hold it until they are outside thereby keeping the nest as clean as possible. Both of mine sat on eggs and took turns but it really kicks in when they hatch.

ty Sandra i've been using paper towels to line bottom of nest box, they are layered 8 sheets in total creating cushion effect.my house heat is 24-25 celicius, with a window open for fresh air and to prevent high humidity levels its quite comfy in here.do u think the eggs with b ok?

I know my avian vet is dead set against any kind of wood chips for birds though, for the life of me, I can't remember why. We didn't even use wood chips when we had the guinea pigs or the ferret - we used the paper bedding you mention. I use ground corn cob bedding for my birds cages right now.

You don't want to reduce the humidity to the point where it is too dry as that can be bad for the chicks when they hatch. But from the sound of it you should be okay, I'm hoping a couple of other people will wiegh inn soon as well.

Re: cockatiel laid another egg part 2

what did he recommend for bedding then?(vet)
cob bedding is under your cage grate. right where birds can't get it?not while nesting, in nestbox ,right? i'm sure its not in their reach right...i've heard it could be mistaken for food pellets... i'm gonna use papertowels on bottom 8 layers, carefresh.
but will probably change to aspen/pine shavings on thurs.

as for the heat its 24 degrees celcius ,with window open to not let the humidity get high... the temp. is comfy in here. ty again Sandra

and baby #4 is laid 4 eggs now

Hi Mitch, I'm hoping this will help as to bedding - it does explain the why or why nots. No, I have never used corn cob in any nest box. I'll try to take pix of the disassembled nest box to show you what went in.

    ty Sandra gr8 link too
but now i'm confused it said paper is best, for nest cause pine chicks could eat but what about eggs i've been told paper could dehydrate air sac in egg.....i've found at least three ppl who say paper is fine but others say no it does not keep heat around egg, like wood does, when parents are gone briefly...what do you people think?
