Lovebird babies - growth progress & co-parenting (picture heavy)

Well I believe eggs are done hatching now. We ending up with 4/6, not bad for their first clutch, I don't think. I candled the last 2 eggs, and although I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to candling, egg #4 looks totally empty... egg#6 I had a harder time telling. I think it's empty too. I will leave them in there for a little while longer and then I'll probably remove them so they don't get broken and make a mess.

The four babies are doing great so I thought I'd share lots and lots of pictures. They're freaky naked pink dinosaur-look is really starting to grow on me

Here is Chick #1 (11 days old), who opened his/her eyes a few days ago. Something about the fact that he can look me in the eye now makes him 100X cuter.

Here is Chick #2 or 3 (8 or 9 days old), I can't tell them apart because they were only hatched a day apart and look nearly the same (to me). I think this one is the third because he isn't as dark as the other, although they're practically the same size.

And Chick #2... or 3 (8 or 9 days old). Ack.

And finally, Jellybean (4 days old)! He's so darn tiny. And the only one with an official name so far

Rafiki continues to amaze me with her total acceptance of my poking around in the nestbox. When I knock and open it now she steps to the side and she doesn't mind me picking the babies up. I have been 'borrowing' the oldest one for short spans of time to get started with socializing as I'm taking the 'co-parenting route'. Mom & dad get to feed the babies but I will be taking them out and playing with them so they'll be tame.

So far I've mostly been spending time with Chick#1 and I'm finding the whole experience really cool. He snuggles right up in my fingers and seems quite comfortable while I blabber on to him about nonsense. He's a pretty good listener.
I'll be posting updates on how things go in the future

Re: Lovebird babies - growth progress & co-parenting

The 2 middle chicks have their eyes open! I was hoping one would open them first so I could figure out which one is older but they tricked me again. Only 10 days old and they've already outsmarted me, typically lovebirds! More pics when I get home tonight.

    Can't wait for feathers!
I also ordered my DNA sexing kits from Healthgene because I plan on having them all sexed, when they're old enough, for curiosity.

Re: Lovebird babies - growth progress & co-parenting

More pictures today! I do a little photography as a hobby but I'm not that great with lighting/white balance... I always mean to figure that out but ever get around to it, lol.

Chick #1 (13days). I think green for this one...

Chick #2 (11days). Getting yellow feathers for sure I think! But ALL yellow, I think it's going to be Abu's unique brand of pied (almost total coverage.) this guy fell asleep on me today, I think he was comfortable

    Chick #3 (10days)

And little Jellybean (6days). He's a real trooper. Doing great despite being so tiny compared to his 3 monstrous siblings!

Re: Lovebird babies - growth progress & co-parenting

Okay, here's an update on the babies.

Everybody's doing great and as the babies get older I actually get to see my Rafiki more often! She occasionally leaves the nestbox for some chill time.

Co-parenting is going great. I take the babies out daily for playtime and they seem to be enjoying it. I can already see a bit of their personalities coming out. They've all been given what I hope are unisex names - I call them the 'candy crew' and I've assigned them temporary genders until I officially sex them, lol.

Gummi bear (16 days in these photos) is pretty hyper. He's always looking around and trying to climb all over my hand. He's starting to look more and more like an actual bird... Getting his green feathers coming in

Lollipop (14 days) is gummi's polar opposite. When I pick her up she wiggles into a comfy spot in my hand and most of the time, snoozes and enjoys being petted.

JuJube (13 days) is a cutie. She seems pretty curious so far but not as active as Gummi.

And Jellybean (9 days) just opened his eyes a few days ago... but he doesn't like keeping them open just yet. Guess things look pretty bright the first time you use them and it takes some getting used to! Still fuzzy and pinkish, but getting cuter.

Re: Lovebird babies - growth progress & co-parenting

Yes congrats. They look soo cute! Im wondering, is Lollipop going to be a pied? Cause I see some green and yellow pin feathers. Im still new at this and Im trying to learn how to tell what type of mutation they are.

Re: Lovebird babies - growth progress & co-parenting

I think Lollipop is going to be a green-series pied, yes. Green series because her down when she hatched was orangey (it would be white if she were going to be blue-series, I think).

Her daddy Abu is a dutch blue pied, but his pied is so heavy he looks almost all pale yellow rather than having big patches like a lot of other pieds. I think Lollipop pretty much inherited the same pattern, and might only have only a little bit of green in with her yellow. But because she's a green-series she'll be brighter yellow than her dad (Abu is blue, which dimishes the yellow color) with a nice pink face and a blue rump. I think she's going to be really pretty

As for the others I think Gummi bear is going to be just green... the last two I'm not sure. JuJube looks like she may have a few lighter-colored feathers coming in on the belly/tail area, but I don't know if that means she's going to be (not so heavy) pied or not. I'm still learning too, lol!

Like I've said before, I get inheritance and stuff (I'm in university for neuroscience, so I've taken more genetics than I eer wanted to) but actually looking at birds and going, "Oh, this is clearly such and such a mutation!!" I'm not that great at. Pff
