Lightbulb Why does my cockatiel nibble at EVERYTHING

My tiel is a little spoiled baby
but he's always nibbling on something and i'm wondering if i continue to let him nibble on everything if he will carry that trait to adult hood & then it will actually hurt ( he's only 4 months ) So, is nibbling on everything a stage they go through & if not should I teach him to stop? And how would I teach him to stop???

Nibbling is normal - to a bird their beak is their hands. He's exploring his territory. If he nips a bit hard for you, tell him "no" and put him slightly off balance if he's on you, or put him away from you until he's nicer. The occasional nibble is fine though. Typically my tiel will nibble/nip but it never hurts, he's usually just testing where he's going to step, or trying to figure something out... though sometimes he gets mad at me and nips, it still is never hard enough to hurt.

okay good! I've been doing it right then, whenever he nibbles on cords i usually tell him no. The only time it hurts when nibbles in when he trys to dig under my fingernails. Thanks So Much!

Hehe yeah, mine does that too, he's trying to preen me when he does though... and he pulls off hang nails, ow. When they "pick" at things that stand out on our skin (like a mole, or hairs, or fingernails, or hang nails) they are trying to actually be nice but don't understand that they are hurting us.

Yeah. I have a mole on my neck and when I first got my bird he would preen it constantly and OW did that hurt! But, he was just trying to clear off the thing that didn't belong. In the wild, birds pick bugs etc off of each other through preening. Just what they are trying to do with us... but they don't understand that mole, freckle or hang nail really doesn't need to be BITTEN off.

OHHHH! The mole problem! I too have a mole on my neck and my tiels did their utmost to "help" me by trying to preen it off - ouch!

Linda my boyfriend had one on his neck and the bird actually did preen it off, then tried to help him lick up the blood...

Re: Why does my cockatiel nibble at EVERYTHING

I think it's their tool for curiosity. My tiel, Mack, is about 6-8 months, not sure exactly. But he uses his beak to explore everything! He loves to preen people too--moles, freckles, scabs, zits--even earrings. I'm trying to teach him not to mess with my earrings by telling him "no" firmly. It seems to be working. But as long as he's not in danger by nibbling, I'd say he's just a curious bird.

Whitney, to a tiel, "No" just means, "Try again later." Earrings are a favorite, by the way : )

It's funny you guys say that because Mojo is ALWAYS trying to get at my earrings, everyday. I don't know how many times i have to gently push him away and say no, he just walks away and comes right back. I end up having to hide my ears in my hair. He's not a very good listener

Re: Why does my cockatiel nibble at EVERYTHING

Sally, my solution was to just take the earrings off, or the neckchain or bracelet. Take them off and hide them underneath something. "NO" does not work : ) Solid silver or gold bangle bracelets are safe, although I did once throw one away with the newspaper on the bottom of the cage...

Re: Why does my cockatiel nibble at EVERYTHING

I have just recently brought 2 parakeets. I have one that has just recently started flying over and landing on us no problem. Where as the other flys over lands on us and nibbles our necks until they pierce the skin. And we have to move to get her to fly off. Any suggestions on how to stop her from bitting our necks please??
