Are they or aren't they? Will they or won't they?

Today I'm putting a nestbox and Cuttlebone in Celebrian and Luthien's cage.

    I don't know for sure if they're even Male/Female?

Celebrian - Built like a linebacker, has tucked paper
Luthien - tall, thin, vocal, never tucked, and has recently mounted one of my other young birds that presented itself.

None of this is concrete I know, but I'm going to give it a try. If after a few days, one of them doesn't take ownership of being nest caretaker and they're both just using it as a sleep place, then I guess I can assume they're the same sex and I'll remove it. If it looks like they're settiing up shop and assuming roles, I'll amp up they're diet for egg laying and babies...and see how it goes.

I'll try to take pics once I get the nestbox in. The hooks didn't work for my cage so I've had to get creative on how I'll attach it. Hopefully it'll work out OK.

Give them more time, birds new to nestboxes can take days, sometimes weeks to discover the box. On the second round they are usually in the box within 24 hours!

The hooks on the front of the nestbox wouldn't work for my cage because the breeder door was just under the top frame of the cage. So using two small dowel perches I had made to hang toys in lower areas of large cages, I created a floor for the box to rest on. I then bungee corded it to the cage tightly. Mission accomplished!!!

I put the divider in their cage and sectioned them off to the side of the nestbox. it was so changed up that they were pretty freaked for a while. They were clinging to each other in the corner. LOL

After about a half hour they started stretching their necks to peak inside. Shortly after that, Luthien (the Lutino) went in. It was so funny...once she got inside both of them started making the lovebird "Fart" noise back and forth to each other. Luthien came out after about 3 minutes then Celebrian went in. Since then they have been in together...but for the most part it's been Luthien in there and Celebrian at the door. So maybe I have it backwards and Luthien is female and Celebrian is the male??? Or who knows...it's probably still to early to determine anything. I "undivided" their cage and threw in some paper for them chew up. Let's see...

    They are so cute!

Is Celebrian the orange headed one? If so, I would say that SHE is definitely a girl Definitely a resemblance to Skittles' body structure and she's a proven female

Maria, that was my thought from the beginning and the reason I put the nestbox in.

I should have spent the $40 and had them DNA'd. lol

LOL you know the first time i put the nestbox with Chester and Hannah it was Chester (the male) who got in 1st and spend 3 days in it (coming in and out) tho i thought he was a she and that Hannah was a he LOL until i saw them mating Chester on top of Hannah but still he was the one going in and out XD so then i thought mmm maybe they are 2 males LOL but then Hannah's torpedo butt appeared XD and she started collecting paper and nesting material and then she started going in the nestbox... and stayed there long periods incubating the eggs and only came out like 2 minutes stretch her wings and legs and then back in... and Chester fed her like 6 times a day... :P

Well maybe there's hope yet. :-)

Actually, they haven't even gone in it today. I've decided to leave it in until next week Thursday though, when I once again do full cage cleaning. Seems like an appropriate time to remove it if they're not using it.

I just can't get over your birds beauty! They are truly stunning and I'm sure they'll create awesome chicks! If you're close enough I may just sneak one out haha...well based on body structure, I think you have the male and female you want...but then you never know, even body structure can lie. The only thing you can be sure of is if they make some babies. Give it time and patience...and cross your fingers!

    Thanks Konnie!

Well today someone was busy shredding paper. I have no idea if it was Celebrian, Luthien, or both. I haven't checked inside the nestbox to see if someone took some up there, as I don't want to mess with it until I see they're seriously utilizing it. I did see Luthien inside with Celebrian just outside once today...but for the most part, they have been on the other side of the cage when I've check on them. That's the update for the day! lol

Re: Are they or aren't they? Will they or won't they?

Ohhh exciting! You got to give them more than a week though! If they are not in breeding condition they won't be stimulated enough to want to breed. Increase the protein foods (seeds, give them a few sunflower seeds too, and millet), extra light hours (if possible) and loads of stuff to shred and chew. Some of my first time breeders took 2-3 weeks until they started using the nestbox. The same pairs now usually have the first eggs within 3 weeks of giving them a box.

I recently gave a nestbox to 3 pairs, all proven, mature pairs. The first eggs were laid within 8-9 days of offering them the nest, which means the egg production began the morning they were given the nestbox! That just shows what an influence a potential nesting site has upon birds.

It wouldnt suprise me if Luthien is the female of the pair. Who knows :P
