    Police/Ambulance Siren

Just wondering why my birdie screams and acts up when the police or ambulance passes by my house and she hears them??? This has always puzzled me.

Loud noise she doens't know about probably scared her. That, or sometimes they want to mimic annoying noises. Most likely she is spooked though.

think of when dogs howl when a siren goes by. Dogs hear the frequencies more defined than we do, I would assume that birds do too. that or what my hubby suggested, she might be a serial killer.

    Re: Police/Ambulance Siren

Ahh I see, but she has been doing this since I got her. Do you know if this is normal for all cockatiels? Because the other bird I had (he sadly passed away a bit more then a year ago) did the same thing... :/

Dori does the same thing. She also squeals when the tones drop on the scanner. I think there are just certain pitches and tones that set them off.

    Re: Police/Ambulance Siren

My bird doesn't make a lot of noise when the loud noises go off, he gets flat, crest up and lets out one warning squawk then goes silent. It depends on what your birds reaction is to certain noises, but yeah it's pretty normal for loud noises to freak them out. You should see my cockatiel when I sneeze, takes a while to calm him down

Glad to know that it's normal for them to act that way!
Haha, your bird gets scared when somebody sneezes, but mine does the same when somebody blows their nose! xD Silly little creatures, aren't they?

Thank you all for your comments and replies guys!

Probably finds the sounds of the sirens annoying. I know I cup my ears when sirens are near me. My dog can't stand sirens.

Glad to hear it's normal pet behavior! It's weird how my other birdy did the same thing, but I guess they all learn from each other!

funny, I have two cockatiels and one of them always goes crazy whenever he hears a police siren on tv, the other one could care less, nice to know mine is not crazy and that there are other ones like him.

My bird freaks at the sound of the kitchen timer. I wonder if it sounds like some larger, threatening bird in the wild.

    Re: Police/Ambulance Siren

From my past experience, my birds eventually got used to hearing sirens from firetrucks, police cars and ambulances. I live near a main road and the fire department / ems is less than a half mile away. It took them about a month to get used to the noise. Also, I live about a 1/4 mile from a railroad track and they also got used to the train whistles. I think when I brought my fids home, they were very young and had a chance to get used to many different noises. But my birds would literally freak out when the Emergency Broadcasting System did their tests on either the radio or television.
