    Question Frayed tail

My bird Tilly's tail is frayed. I wondered what causes it and how to help. He is not affected by it at all!

    Re: Frayed tail

Babies play pretty hard, this can wreck a tail.
If your perches are too close to the cage side, this will wreck a tail.
If you bird likes climbing the cage side and your cage has mostly vertacal wires, this can wreck a tail.

You can help "fix" the tail feathers that are not broken. Take a cup of VERY hot water and dip the tail into it. You don't want to burn your bird so be sure to have a hold of it properly so it does not try to take a plung in the hot water. Take your fingers and smooth the feathers/barbs out in the correct direction. This is what exhibition budgie people do if a bird messes up a tail just before a show.
