    Cere brown and crusty.

    Hello!
My Budgie has a brown, crusty cere. I know that this can happen naturally to females when they are ready to breed, but I'm actually not sure if my budgie is male or female. I know that this can also be caused by mites, but his/her feet look normal. I'm just a little worried.

Excuse my ignorance. Please have a look and let me know if this looks normal or if it appears to be caused by mites! Thanks so much for your advice!

I have two parakeets (females) who get the exact same thing. Nothing to be worried about, just means they're in breeding mode. You can actually pick it off for them if they're willing. I don't have the guts to do it though!

    Re: Cere brown and crusty.

You're welcome. One of ours looks really nasty - her cere is huge and crusty! I tried to pick it off, but I don't want to hurt her. The lady who trims my birds' nails always does it and they always look so nice afterwards.
