What's a Reasonable Rehoming Fee For A Meyer's?
In my area (Upper Peninsula of Michigan) there is someone trying to rehome a Meyer's parrot. They are wanting $375.00 for the bird. Does that sound reaonable to you? The bird is 8 years old, and they have not had it for very long.

Depends on area sometimes, but here I can get a baby for 400.00...which is Iowa. Does it come with cage and stuff? I personally would pass unless I was very drawn to the particular bird, but maybe that's just me.

Well, it's probably similar to Iowa around here. Very rural area. Not another Meyer's anywhere around, I would assume.
The owner is willling to come down, so I'm debating what to offer. There is a cage included, but it's not worth much.

Have you tried doing a internet search for breeders in your area or are you very limited to travel? I was seriously considering a Meyers for my next parrot, but decided I'm going with the blue headed pionus. Being this bird is older, a lot will depend on how past owners treated it and that'll determine how much work you'll have to do. What is the owners reasons for having to get rid of him after only having him for a short time? Maybe ask them if they will take less, or offer them 250-300. I'm not good at dealing myself...my breeder knocked 150 off the BHP I'm getting, but she made the offer [I didn't ask]. I've been dealing with her for well over 10 years now, so it was just a nice gesture I'm sure [one that I appreciate greatly ].
Which speaking of, I'm not huge on shipping...but it is an option to consider, if you wanted to look at breeders who do.

I wasn't looking for a bird, just happened to see an ad for this one not too far from me. I had seriously considered a Meyers in the past, but decided on Lineolated Parakeets.
They have now sent me a note saying they would take $310.00, but that is still more than I would want to pay. It sounds like a nice bird with no real issues, but still.

Well if it's more than you are willing to pay, simply throw them the top offer you would and tell them that's the highest you can go. The worse they can say is no, but you never know...they may be really wanting to get rid of the bird, especially if no one else is showing an interest [which may be possible, their price is a bit high imo].

Well, I doubt I will hear from them again, since I told them they were asking a lot for a re-homing fee.

Ah I see...well, maybe one will pop up again with a more reasonable fee, but I think you were right there.

I paid $200.00 for a Senegal 3 year old parrot. She decided she didn't like birds after she got him. I got the bird, and 2 cages for that. The bird is fabulous. He is healthy, does lots of tricks and loves to cuddle. It took 3 years to get him that way. But the journey was fun and worth it.
He is a love to come home to.
Maybe you can find out what Upper Mich prices are?
Write cjh if you have a question.

Well, as expected they never got back to me after I told them that their re-homing fee was high. In looking at prices of Meyer's I came across a beautiful little Parrotlet that I have put a deposit on.
